I switched over to Charter residential service from Verizon Business DSL after I had moved all my previously self-hosted applications to proper service providers. I wanted to move my phone service to a cheaper VoIP provider and did not want to retain a phone line. (As it turns out, my DSL modem got cooked by a power surge days before I disconnected service.)
I bought my cable modem at Best Buy with the intent to self-install, which according to the Charter rep, I was unable to do. However, an appointment was found within the week and two technicians showed up and ran through the modem registration process in about 10 minutes.
I ordered the 5mb/512k package which has a going price of $59.99/mo without any other Charter services. I have been able to get the advertised speeds most of the time, but it seems to largely depend on the remote server I'm connecting to. 512k upload speed is good, though I miss the 768k I got on DSL from time to time. This is the lowest tier of service available. It's a shame they eliminated their lower-priced offerings. I use no other Charter services.
The only gotcha that I could find as a residential customer is that ICMP is blocked at the peering connections with the ISPs which serve my area. I'm sure it's to stop ping scans of customer subnets, but that's about it. It does, however, interfere with my old IPv6 tunnel broker.
(Also, in interest of full disclosure, I am an employee of Charter. This review reflects my experience before my hire date.)
