I have 4 choices where I live.
1) Dial-up $15 to $35 56kbps/56kbps
2) Satellite $70 to $150 1Mbps/56kbps
3) DSL $30 to $60 3Mbps/256kbps
4) Cable $20 to $70 10Mbps/1Mbps
The first 2 aren't even options as far as I'm concerned. I have tried both DSL and Cable and I always go back to the cable. There is several reasons for that.
Charter is reliable. If they say they are going to be out to you on a certain day they always are. Charter has the fastest speeds in my area. They give me great promotions all the time as a "thank-you" just for being a long time customer (10+ years). Everything from getting the fastest speeds not offered to the general public to free movies and channels (not those one week previews things either). Another great thing is I can get all the services I need through one source. TV, Net and Phone. Through them I pay roughly $120 a month. That sounds like a lot but when you consider I am getting solid channels (expanded cable, HBO, Cinemax, 40 music channels, Showtime, HD). My phone service has not gone down ONCE in 2 years. Not one single time. I get free US long distance, all the extra features (Call waiting, call return, caller ID, voice mail). My Cable is great. Downloading files at 10Mbps is great. that means I can download a full CD (650megs) per minute If I wanted to. The 1 meg up-speed is perfect for my Xbox 360 gaming as I can host games with no problems. The last part that is the greatest is no freaking contracts. I can come and go with them as often as I want. Cancel service, change service, order added service, at any time with no penalties and usually with a savings if I add stuff.
My only complaint is the cost and tech support. 10meg usually costs about $70 a month in my area. Right now I am on a "thank you" offer for 6 months @ $25 a month. The tech support bothers me sometimes because a lot of the times I know much more than the tech people whom I call. I do wish they would train their techies to have higher knowledge than the standard 1,2,3 steps found in a troubleshooting book. They're great for soccer Moms and Grandma's who call for your run of the mill problems, but when it comes calling about line noise or signal ratios sometimes I get someone who (1 out of 3) has no idea what they are talking about or rather what I am talking about.
Other than those 2 things I would day they are truly and great service and give you the highest quality service you can get.
