I am visiting a friend in upper East Tennessee. She lives a little out of town in an old farm house. When the Charter tech came to install the cable he was asked to run the cable directly to where her cable modem was going to be and then split the signal to the televisions. He didn't understand that request at all. Her service is only fair. At time the poor install causes a VERY high latency (195-245ms) and at best best about 1/2 the speed that she is paying for. I am in the process of trying to get another tech out to correct the poor install and see if that will help. I did help the service by getting a Linksys modem to replace the Webstar that Charter sent and by using a decent short piece of coax to replace the 10 foot half put together piece that was originally installed. I installed the new modem last night and it took forever to finally speak to a live person. I couldn't convince the automated attendant that I was not just having a problem with my modem but needed to change the MAC address. She of course had me rest the modem and such things, but once I got a person on the phone he was one of the most knowledgeable techs I have had a conversation with in a long time. He knew what he was doing and was the one who suggested calling for the correction of the install when I told him about why her connection was so slow. I think it is just the fact that most of the techs must have worked for UTS (United Intermittent Telephone), the former local TELCO, either don't care or are just ignorant to what is actually needed for a good install for a fast internet connection. I will report back after the new install with a report about that experience and if that corrected the problems.
