I've had charter hsi for 5 years now. The service has been very reliable with little to no downtime except for one occasion earlier this year. My signal degraded and I would lose the internet connection on occasion. Called charter and they sent a tech out who tested the line and found the problem was on the pole. He fixed that and since then it has been pretty much 100% reliable again.

My only complaint is the extreme cost of the service.

I am paying $118/month for just expanded basic cable and 5mb/512kb hsi. That's $55 for each service, plus taxes. That is just ridiculous. But I have no other options available to me. But like I said, at least the service is reliable and up all the time, which cannot be said of my ATT landline ;o(

    Thoughts

Your POTS line gives you trouble? That's odd. In my experience POTS has been the most reliable of any service I've ever used. I think there are also laws that mandate a minimum amount of reliability.

If you use Callvantage then I'd find it easier to believe that you might have trouble. One reason I maintain the POTS line is because of the reliability.

As for price, I can understand. I use Charter Business, which is even pricier. But here's my suggestion. You say that your 5M/512k costs $55. In my area (and I live in Glen Carbon, it's very close) 10M/1M costs $60 non-promo. Perhaps you should get the 10M/1M? It's only $5 more, and it's twice as fast. You won't be spending less, but it'd certainly be a better value.

yup, just the plain old telephone line goes out everytime it rains, for a day or so. Then it dries out and works again. The last att tech to come out said he was going to get to the root of the problem and fix it for good, like all the others should have. We shall see, it's supposed to rain again this week.

I'd switch to charter, but they are more expensive for phone. I don't need all the extra crap they throw in. I just need a basic telephone.

as for the 10m/1m line, it is a better value, but I don't need that speed. I use no p2p or filesharing or music downloading. I'd be satisfied with slower service even if I could get it at a reasonable price. It's a shame that this is the cheapest tier that charter offers.
