they make cable available where I live
service is quite variable, charges have escalated dramatically
carefully consider options other than charter (satellite, DSL, uverse, etc.)

ORIGINAL COMMENT: I've been a charter customer for over 20 years. they have gone from a good product with good service at a fair price to a price gouging monopoly.

UPDATE: on the advice i received here regarding a recent problem, i interacted via charter direct and the problem seems to be resolved. a complaint about my monthly bill resulted in an adjustment that has brought the price down. i appreciate the convenience of this forum as it is much, much better than charter phone support. i still however am not pleased at how the level of service has deteriorated and will be interested in seeing how things are now going forward.

Re: what

i have cable TV and internet.

they have tried to sell me phone multiple times, with some high pressure tactics.

if they would improve their current service i'd sign up for phone without any sales pressure, but as of now i have no problems with ATT phone and would dread having to deal with Charter for another service.

Monopoly.

I honestly don't know your area at all, but if you have the option of going with "Satellite, DSL, uverse, etc" wouldn't that make charter NOT a monopoly? Just sayin'.

Also, if you don't like your pricing, you should certainly post in the Charter Direct forum and see if they can get you a better deal. There's always the 24 month price guarantee as well.

Re: Monopoly.

our county contracts with and allows only one cable vendor

many homes here do not have satellite as an option as no line of sight access -- lots of trees and mountains

no uverse -- yet. but open the floodgates when it comes!

thus charter monopoly -- get it?

for those who have a choice, i recommend avoiding charter.

i've spent hours on the phone with charter trying to get lower rates such as those they advertise, and always get the line "for new customers only" or some other double talk as to why i can't have a better rate. it is a dead end argument. they used to cheerfully set me up with a better package/rate back in the "good old days."

i do, however, appreciate your taking the time to make the suggestion.
