Unfortunately, Windstream has no competition in my area. I got off to a rocky start with them - lots of problems with speed, latency, and over-selling their capacity. This went on for nearly 1 year - great speeds at 3AM, close to dial-up speeds between 6PM and midnight.

Then, I had the need for a static IP. The cost is more than double, but I had no choice. The best part about it is that I have had a rock solid connection with near full speeds 24/7 for about 6 months now. And, 1 other benefit is that when I do need to call support, they are based in the states and everyone there is very helpful!

I have the 6 meg package and am very pleased except for the cost. But, I can't afford to be without a connection so it is what it is. I know Windstream can provide excellent service now that I have seen it, I just wish it was like this when I was on a regular consumer line.

    Interesting...

I have a business account with static IP's located about 1 mile from my home, which has a normal residential account.

Everything regarding the connection is the same. Speed, uptime and downtime all behave the same on both accounts. I have never had an incident when the residential account was down and my business account was up.

We are in a small town and Windstream is our only DSL choice as well.

    Re: Interesting...

Maybe it was just a coincidence for me. I know if the network goes down, my connection does too. But, it seems as though the speeds are more stable since going with static. Used to be I would get in the low 100k range during prime time on a 6meg connection. Now, I keep 6meg all the time.

Also, some of my neighbors experience the high latency, low speeds during prime time. In fact, the guy across the street from me experiences slow downs all the time.

At any rate, I couldn't ask for better service from any provider at this point. Color me happy.

    Glad it works for you.

6 meg is a dream around here. The best package here gets you 1.5M down / 384K up, regardless of what the website says they offer.

Well, as long as you get that, it is good. Still beats dial up and satellite. Sit tight, I'm sure they will upgrade your area. It might be behind everyone else, but it will get there.

The neighborhood next to mine has fiber. I'm not sure why they couldn't go another couple hundred feet with it, but 6meg is plenty for what I need (as well as most of the people out there).
