  • Location: Port Coquitlam, BC, Canada
  • Cost: $60 per month
  • Install: about 1 days
  • No Cap
  • Telco party Telus
Service was very reliable. Only had downtime for 30 mins during an update within my 3 years of service.
Wifi had a bit of an issue at our old place where wifi DL speeds didn't match advertised rates.New home has no such problems now
With a long term promotional rate, I've had nothing but a positive experience.

(Circa 2011) Started around 2 years ago with telus 25/2.5.

* Installation was timely.

* Technician was friendly.

* Telus automatically pushed me up to 25/5 service without me having to ask for the same promo pricing I was on.

* Random speedtests had me consistantly at 24.50+mbps down and over 5.5mbps up on my hardline connection.

* Wifi in the same room was satisfactory with my Actiontec wifi gateway. However speed dropped significantly on wifi. My PS3 in the same room only could get 17mbps on its wifi speedtest. Other areas in the home within a reasonable distance was slower. Not enough to cause a real issue overall, but still a noticable drop if we're just looking at numbers.

* Softcap has been beneficial - as my partner has been pregnant and at home regularly the last 8 months her netflix usage and our overall usage increased because of it. While the plan gives us 250 GB, we didn't receive any letters, warnings, presure to upgrade even though we currently are averaging 350 - 450GB monthly.

we are not people to take advantage of others but, we have been very thankful and feel fortunate that Telus has not been enforcing overages even though we clearly have been going over regularly.

Overall - I've been a happy client for the last two years. I recommend Telus as long as you are happy with their pricing since the service has been reliable and as advertised (on hardline).

(JUNE 2014)

Unfortunately I am planning to cancel and move back to Shaw as Telus is unable / unwilling to continue my promotional rate. While I was getting what some may consider a high promo rate (10.00 MSF credit + 5.00 MSF credit over 12 months = 50.00 + taxes/mo) they stand to lose a customer who has no late payments and comes to 672.00 / year. Heck, I may not be worth much - but its better in their pockets than their competitor(s) I would think.

Anyhow, the first 6 month promo savings at Shaw will allow me to bank the savings (50.00/mo down to 30.00/mo) to offset the cost of a new router and modem purchase / activation fee for Teksavvy after Shaw's 6 month promo pricing expires.

UPDATE - June 25, 2014

Requested my cancellation for the end of my promotion. The agent, just like the previous one, was polite and nice to speak with. After confirming my reasons for cancelling she was able to get approval to continue my promotional rate for another 12 mos. I don't know if their first offer for Internet only customers is to be higher (Probably so they can try to increase ARPU) or if Telus' marketing teams opened up the stacked discounts again for their Loyalty agents and the previous agent didn't have it in his toolkit at the time of my call, but based on the experience, I'm happy to continue my services with Telus as the service, customer service and pricing all met my needs. While I'm not the highest revenue generated client, I'm glad they were able to see that my money is better in their pocket instead of Shaw's or Teksavvy's.

This confirms my previous positive experiences mentioned above, thus far.

UPDATE - Oct 2015

Since my last update, we had moved homes in November of 2014. As I was setting up our transfer of service to our new home, the moves agent proactively offered us not only an upgrade in service from 25.5 to 50/10 but gave us an even better price than what we had been paying. We were given a rediculous deal to get the 50/10 for 50.40 taxes in for a whole year. That was fantastic. Combine that with the fact that the 50/10 service comes with a free wifi extender plus option and Telus had really upped our value. Now, I dont know why the moves agent had that offer available - my guess now that its almost a year later is that my new home is located in Port Coquitlam where they have rolled out there better FTTN or FTTH service where the max package available here now is 100mbps. Maybe that had something to do with it.

Either way, since we moved to our new home, our wifi has been better throughout the house on all of our devices, cell phones, laptops, tablets etc. Signal strength only once in awhile drops to 3 out of 4 bars on our devices but the speed is always very consistant. Next month, we'll see how things go with our promotions. It will be very hard for Telus to come back with the same pricing with our 50/10 package. I won't be mad or look to cancel if they won't match the rate we have right now at 50.40 taxes in with the 50/10. If we pay our old rate of 56 for this package I'll be fine with it, but if its higher we'll look to see what they can do with the 25/5 package.

Since my partner isn't pregnant anymore our average usage is high 100GB to low 200's and 250GB cap shouldn't be an issue.

Oh yeah, thats another thing to mention is that since I first started Telus service, they have now started to enforce their usage caps. For some people this may be a deal breaker. For us, at this time it won't be. We have netflix running daily for a good chunk of the day for sesame street and some crime drama episodes for the boy and my lady. And we torrent 1 TV episode a week. Currently I'm seeding 7 TV episodes (720p HD) and 2 movies and we still average around 200 GB. So, to each their own.

I'll try to update after next month when our promo ends.

UPDATE - JUNE 2019

Since the last review - we were upgraded from the copper 50/10 to fibre 100/100 with great promo rates. From there, they threw in Fibre 150/150 for only 5 bucks more during our renewal from 2017 - 2018. 2018 - to now we were on Fibre 150/150 for $60.00 + taxes. After having to authenticate the account a few times and get connected to the correct team, it took the rep a few moments to come back and easily extend the promotion for 24 months. I only asked to extend it. No port triggers or churn threats had to be mentioned to get an extension. I just pointed out our history and asked for an extention. This has been the longest term extension Telus has offered us to date. I'm fine with 2 years because the service more than meets our needs and the pricing is staying the same for the full 24 months. It's not tiered. This did come with a service commitment on our part but because the pricing isn't changing at all, I'm fine committing to 2 years. We like the service and the price is totally fair. And because it is a 2 year term, the're throwing in unlimited usage as well. Not that it was a concern. We're averaging 400 - 550GB per month with our low end being 300Gb or so and the high end at 600 or so.

Aside from a few hiccups here and there, over the years the Telus RET / LOY team has made it easy to do business with. Give us fair pricing and good service and they can continue to have our money. We added wireless home phone recently (kiddos need to learn how to use basic phones and have access to 911) with them as well because they've been good to work with. So, props to telus. They got us for another 2 years and we're fine with it.
