This is an update to my first review posted in 2007. I've been a Direcway/Hughes customer since 200, jumping at the chance to have another option than dialup at 18-24K. My only experience with satellite ISP has been Direcway/Hughes.
Since tmy first review I finally gave up my 4000 (Hughes was clearly throttling down speed to get the last of us to switch). I changed to the 7000s, Professional Plan with Static IP.
Up-time is mostly dependable. The only real problem I've had was with my satellite hardware, which is to be expected after 6 years. From the lamentations I've read on the Hughes forum at dslreports, I'm considering myself one of the more fortunate ones.
Speeds are well--acceptable I supose, sorta/kinda broadband. Latency does have an adverse effect and prevents access to internet benefits such as VoIP, online gaming and virtual worlds. But, it's a consistent issue with all SatNet providers, not just Hughes.
The monthly rate structure continues to be way out of synch with other types of real broadband ISP providers, but seems to be in in-line with other satellite internet providers.
I've actually had a couple of fairly good experiences with customer service. (I was THAT desperate for help.) But, as stated in my first review, the best source of support/advice/counsel/sympathy is the HughesNet forum on dslreports.
Would I stay with Hughes if other similar/better options were available. NO!
