Had good service for near six years, last half year is a complete different story.
I have still a good installation and for sure no wrong expectations, but I got unlucky. I hit a glitch with Hughes new FAP and got wrongfully faped. only way to correct that was changing service plan and that opened a whole new mess.
very unreliable, problems at the NOC they can't fix.
check cable, dsl, local wireless companies, Sprint and Alltel EVDO first. All will give you much better service for a lot less money. I know Sprint has not a good customer service reputation, but let me tell you Hughes is worst then that
Update:
I have now for two months Verizon Wireless. four computers connected to a single account. and it is a dream compared to HN. loging in to online banking is 5 sec, not 90 sec (on a good day). download all the time between 600 and 1000 kbps, upload 400 to 800 kbps ... finally running websites is fun again. BTW the speed is the same in clear weather or nasty snowstorm.
So when you are looking for HN service, do yourself a favor. check Sprint mobile broadband, Alltel and Verizon wireless first. They are cheaper and offer much better service.
Also beware of their billing department. When I canceled two months ago they needed over a month to give me the correct final bill. I paid it well before the due date on that bill and two days after my full payment HN started a collection through a "phony" collection company.
So you need to be very good in anger management to not explode around their sorry ass customer support

| RE: Hughes Day after day, week after week, I enjoy reading the Hughes bashing. I know how people feel when it comes to these guys.
I left them last April and from the way it sounds just in a nick of time. I had the pro plan and the FAP was still at 350mb within a 4 hour period. I had better than advertised speeds most of the time which were usually 1500-1600 but the last month I had it I was experiencing some serious slow downs in the evenings that would last several hours.
I signed on with Direcway in late 2004, the installer showed up, installed the dish but due to a tree problem I was aimed at a alternate satellite. Galaxy 11 I believe. Anyway, the installer aimed it up, went inside and tried to commission my unit. Made a few phone calls and said it would be up and running within the hour. If it's not to call the number he gave me. Finally the next day I realized it wasn't gonna work I called the number, it was not a working number. Ended up calling customer service several times which was in India I believe, could not understand them! Finally on the second day of calling I got to talk to tech support which lead to higher tech support. After about 2 hours on the phone with the tech, running test and so on I was told "You are not on the correct satellite". Duh! Told you what the installer had to do. Anyway, they got me commissioned up and running. I always had fairly decent luck "then" with direcway and only went over my threshold a few times, and I was a power downloader too. The way things seem to be now it's only usable to light surfing and email.
My local Telephone company finally got some DSL out here and I sold my DW7000 and dish on ebay and made out pretty good.
DSL has been great until the last month or so, Centurytel has been acting alot like Hughes with the nightly slowdowns. | |
