I live in the middle of nowhere. There is not DSL, wireless broadband or anything. If this were not the case I would not use hughesnet. Absolutely hate it.
JUST AN UPDATE: Hughesnet has now decided that my yahoogroup emails are spam. I have not received any in 7 days. I was on the phone with them on Thursday for 40 minutes, promised 24 to 48 hours it would be resolved. Talked to them on Sunday (72 hours later), was on the phone with them for 1 hour 10 minutes. Was assured it would be resolved in 24 to 48 hours. It is now 52 hours later, just got off the phone with them...they do not know when it will be resolved and they really do not seem to care. I have a wireless ISP coming out to do a site testing on Thursday. We'll see how that goes. I think I would rather have dial up. Also reported them to the Better Business Bureau.
UPDATE: For the email problem I finally got a gmail account and no longer use hughesnet email at all. Even after the upgrade, it was worse. A lot of personal mail went to spam. I hate dealing with webmail but had to to find email that went to spam.
NEWEST PROBLEM: I had been having the the "Failure to Connect to Web Server" errors for a couple of days. Did a few speed tests on the HN site yesterday. One took forever so I decided to go have lunch and come back. Came back and service was so slow. Took me 5 minutes just to get to the site for the hughesnet phone number. Talked with Technical Support (which is a last resort because they are so bad) and found out I had been FAP'd. I had downloaded nothing. Checked both of my download files - nothing. According to my history, I had been on their site at the time. But of course, they insist that someone downloaded something. I live on 11 acres with my house at least 50 to 75 yards from the road. My wireless router does not work that far. Anyway, I have decided that I am through with hughesnet. Even if Wild Blue is the only thing I can find, I am switching...TOMORROW!!!
UPDATE 11/22/08: I had been out of town for 10 days. Came back, logged on, started downloading all my email when it just went offline. As this is a frequent problem with hughesnet, I didn't worry too much and went to bed. Got up the next morning, still only 3 lights on my HN7000S. With all my might, I called Tech Support as I only call as a last resort. They tried several things which left me with only 2 lights. Told me that I would have to call a technician out at $125. Now, let's also consider that my contract is now expired. If I get a new modem, I would have to sign a new 2 year contract. NOT! I am trying to get away from them.
Called Wild Blue and ordered service. When the installing people called, they told me that because I live in a double wide mobile home, I would have to have the receiver put on a pole. Hmmm...has to go on the South side of my house where you hit rock 2 feet down (my septic is right there so I know). So, I canceled them also.
There are only two wireless companies in my area and neither one of them would work (they came out and tested). One of them has a tower one mile from my house but because of their upgrading, they will not take on new customers.
Was talking to my insurance company, Farm Bureau, and through them I could get AgriStar. So, I called them, turns out they are an agent for gues who?....Hughesnet!!!
So, I then called my cellphone provider AT&T. I now have an aircard for my laptop. It is a bit slower but it works and its steady. The nice thing about it is that I can take it where ever I go and be online.
So, even though it is slower, I'll stick with it just to be done with HughesNet. If you are considering HughesNet, run, do not walk to the nearest go! Do not collect $200. Its not worth it!!! The service sucks and the aggrivation is just not worth it.

1 edit | Outsourcing email. Black listing. If I remember correctly. Hughes now has this as their email provider and well known, to some, about creating a black list of email providers/domains that get blocked are interfered with. Yahoo is one that is hit or miss to whether they get delivered.

| hughesnet Someone recommended that I go into my yahoogroups and change the mail delivery from "fully featured" to "traditional" and it worked. So, at least I am getting my yahoogroups email now.
I don't think I have ever seen a TV advertisement for hughesnet. The only reason I went with them is because I moved here form the city where I had cable and I knew I could not go back to dial up.
I have AirCanopy coming out on Thursday to perform a site test. If it works, hughesnet is gone!!!!!
Even if AirCanopy does not work, hughesnet is GONE!! I WILL find something out after the rude treatment I got from their Advanced Technical Service.

| Re: hughesnet Yesterday, Browsing speeds were at times slower than 56k,(when you could connect) slow ping, and intermittent signal,
Today, We said goodbye to our HN7000S and Hughesnet...Talk about a swell feeling knowing that I will never have to call " Bob " or " Bill " in India and talk about the good ol times, or why this *&$@ing POS does'nt work...it felt good too, I mean like not having to carry a cinder block to church on Sundays. A contract is a contract, but at least they could have gone half way to try to make things right...
Tomorrow, We will remove that 40 lb eye-sore from the roof and convert it in to something useful, a birdbath. The wonders never cease. No more resets, forced ranging, or diagnostic codes that spell nothing but crappy service.
Yes we found an alternative to Hughesnet, Verizon EDVO and we really are please with it.

We have reported them to the Better business burea, Federal trade Commision, FCC, and the Attorney Generals Office ...won't you please join the others like our family who are doing the same. | yep i get Faped every single day.. and it sucks.. i unplug my modem to try to have just some kind of good connection. ive tried to get other people at my house.. but we are just to far from it.
I did try those airport cards.. but you have to be careful, they say they are unlimited connection.. but they really are not. true they have a 5 gig monthly allowance, but i ended up blowing 1gig of it in a week, and decided to take it back. i got charged like 300 bucks for that one gig of useage. stupid version. The only part that is unlimited connection is the WiFi part. if its available in your area, then sure, use the airport cards. or if you dont do much on the net expect for checking your email, watching maybe a video here and there, or checking out facebook, then its a good tool.
see those air port cards, why dont they just make them unlimited, you type in your zip code, they see that you live in a rural area, and then they upgrade you to acutal unlimited. but i called up att and they said that they wouldnt do anything like that.. we were also to get a tower here last year, we still havent seen it.
they just dont get it. | |
