UPDATE - 3-24-10 - if you have a sprint tower near you, get millenicom unlimited. hughesnet better get some new tech fast or they will be out of business in a few months. SELL SELL SELL
i was skeptical for months before using milllenicom, my hughesnet account is on hold right now, in case I happen to find that magic number they call UNLIMITED. i got a bit of a guilt trip thrown at me at 120gb, but nothing more than a statement that there was no fap free policy at millenicom, honestly, i was really just doing what everyone else was afraid to do in the MC forum and diving in head first to see what happened. i didnt really need 120gb of tv shows, but i got a hellofalotta M*A*S*H to watch now lol
i doubt anyone reading this hughesnet review would know what to do with 120gb lol
-----end update
Hughesnet is, as far as I know, the best satellite internet provider around... The other one is Wildblue. Hughenet usage is calculated in a 24-hr period, not monthly. There is also a 5-hr FAP-free window from 2-7am, where downloads are not counted towards your download threshold. I have been a Hughes/Direcway customer for years and I have a few bits of wisdom for new recruits.
1) You must think of Hughesnet as super-fast dialup, not ultra-slow cable.
2) Make certain you have no conceivable land-based alternatives before signing up, now or in the near future. There are no advantages to satellite if you have other internet available, and Hughes has a killer ETF after the trial period.
3) Read and understand Hughesnet policies (FAP) and search Google for more. You need to understand how satellite internet works and understand how to use it before you can really enjoy it. There are certain things you simply cannot do on a satellite connection, the quicker you learn to avoid these things, the happier you will be
4) You must have a practical usage monitor. I recommend hughesnet_usage_calc for Firefox with Greasemonkey, but there are others available.
5) There are no hacks.
Overall, Hughesnet is a decent service for those of us with few other options.

 | | | massive rip off hughes net scammed the shit out of me and they solve there problems by hanging up on you over the phone. I moved into a new house with a preexisting hughesnet statalite and agreed to a contract just buying the survice not a satalite(why would i buy one when i already had one). hughes net then sent over a subcontracter who has no connection with the companey who took down the old satalite and put up a new one. i wasnt worried becuse i made it so clear i was not buying one from them, and the man said he had no charges for me. now hughes net will not give me my money back, have hang up on me too times, will not call me back this is at best criminal. they are a big disorginized componey with no integrity. besides all this my internet connection is horrable. | |
