Heya guys,
Well I finally got it. DSL!! Unbelieveable. Let me give you a brief run down on what I've gone through and who my saviour was.
June 99: Bell Atlantic lists ADSL on website. It'll be available in July. I'm naive still ... I think that I'll have it soon. LOL!!!
July 99: Website updated ... now it's mid July.
Insert 5 more delays here ranging from July until December with half a dozen phone calls to BA asking what the heck is going on. I called Northpoint, Covad and a slew of other companies during this time to see if DSL was available in my area. Nada, zip ... nothing.
Dec 99: BA postpones again. Their site says "It's not ready yet but it'll be available in 3 months". It still says the same thing now at the end of Jan. Nice huh? :\
In a fit of bitchyness (if there is such a word) I posted to Usenet about the injustice of it all. I got several "I feel your pain man" and one post from a guy who said check out Megapath.net. I figured I had nothing to lose.
Dec 7th '99: I called and talked to a dude by the name of Chyett Smith. Very professional, friendly and knowledgable. He tells me that I can get DSL. My jaw hits the floor. He tells me the prices and how the install would go down if I ordered.
Dec 8th '99: I order. Within a few hours I get several emails explaining the installation process as well as what might happen when dealing with Northpoint and Bell Atlantic. Kind of a bummer. Even trying to go with someone else I have to deal with Bell Atlantic. Such is life though. I trudge on knowing that I'm closer to my goal. =)
Over the next 2 weeks I call and email my questions and concerns. I *always* got an answer within 24 hours. Usually they would come back within the hour. I'm shocked by the whole process really.
I get a FOC date from Megapath saying that Bell Atlantic will be coming out on the 27th of Dec. to do the line work. If all goes well I might be up and running in less than a week after when Northpoint comes out to finish the install.
Dec 27th '99: BA comes out. Houston we have a problem. I still have a dialtone on my wire. I live in an apartment and only have 2 pair of copper to my house. Both are analog lines, one for phone and one for my dialup. I'm told that I have to cancel service on the 56k line before BA can set their stuff up and test with Northpoint. The line is canceled 2 days later by BA.
Jan 26th '00: Well after 3 weeks of waiting on NP and BA to fix several problems on their end Bell Atlantic comes back out to do the testing. The first thing I heard from the BA tech was "What the hell is this crap?" regarding the wiring job down in the box. Apparently the 1st tech really messed up several things. After an hour of fixing he comes back up and calls Northpoint. BOOM. We have a winner. Everything checks back to the cage and we're ready for the next step.
Jan 29th '00: A Northpoint rep comes out and gets to work at 10am. By 11:30 he's done and we call Megapath. A short time after they call back. Inside of 20 min I'm up and running full speed. My head spins. I feel like I'm on a virtual cloud nine. The damn thing feels faster than our T1 at work. WOOHOO!!
All I can say to those folks at Megapath is thank you. Chyett, Sharol, Leigh and Jeff ... you guys rock. I owe you all a beer or three. Thanks for dealing with my every question and frustration in deal with the telco companies. Also a BIG thanks to the owners of Megapath. You guys have hired some great people. I hope their work doesn't go unrewared. *hint hint* =)
My service is only 24 hours old but all I can say is WOW. I purchased a 784 SDSL connection and it works like a charm. I've seen speeds up to 700kpbs already from certain sites. I *know* I'm getting my moneys worth.
If you want a very seriously customer service oriented company look no further. They're a bit pricey compared to the Bells ADSL solutions but you get what you pay for. I know my money is well spent here.
Peace out, SaintDude
