(posted 2001) ...at the six-month mark, a DSL refugee reports:
Same IP for months. Must call if you change computers or add a NATbox. I like this.
No servers on 80. Your subnet (neighbors) is blocked. I like this, too.
News: binaries retention just milliseconds. Completeness F-G. Text groups fine. (*News is now an outsourced, 128kbps service, but it's still there, which is remarkable.)
Mail: pretty damn reliable. They have Webmail.
Occasional DNS clots. Occasional routing clots. (*Much less frequent)
I like 'em. (*Still do)
========== (update, 2009-01, comments above, with "*" added just now)
Pros: Still good service. Tier 1-2 support now in the Phillipines, but everyone is outsourcing. Response time to problems (with phone, broadband, or TV) is good. Good representation here on the RCN board (a BIG plus for me). 20GB service really IS that in my neck of the woods. More importantly, 750 up lets you use it, if needed.
cons: a bit pricey. But I'm in NYC, so what's new? My own Tosh cablemodem couldn't make Mach 20; had to go back to renting (a Surfboard).
