Tech Support:
(ratings well below consensus)

Here's what the Bell Atlantic web site says:

The minimum PC system requirements for Infospeed DSL at present are:

* Windows 95/98 or NT 4.0
* Intel Pentium/Pentium Pro/Pentium MMX/Pentium II, AND K5/K6,
or Cyrix 586/686 processor
* 32MB RAM (64MB recommended)
* 25MB free hard drive space
* resources to accommodate an Ethernet card if one is not already
present (available slot, available IRQ, available I/O resources)

Here's what the Bell Atlantic web site really means (based on the
instructions BA sends out after you subscribe and on information from
technical support staff at BA):

The minimum PC system requirements for Infospeed DSL at present are:

* Windows 95/98, or NT 4.0 Workstation running Service Pack 4;
NT Server is not supported, and if you have the latest service
packs installed for NT, you must downgrade your system by
rolling back two service pack levels (effectively re-installing
all bugs and security holes corrected by service packs 5 and 6);
all networking support must be uninstalled before installing
the BA software; if you currently have any existing networking
settings installed (for example, for RAS or IP dialup to other
servers) you must remove them
* Intel Pentium/Pentium Pro/Pentium MMX/Pentium II, AND K5/K6,
or Cyrix 586/686 processor
* 32MB RAM (64MB recommended)
* 25MB free hard drive space on the C: drive; BA DSL service will
not function unless you install the distributed software in the
directories specified by BA; furthermore, you must install an
older version of Netscape Navigator, even if you are currently
running the most recent version released by Netscape
* resources to accommodate an Ethernet card if one is not already
present (available slot, available IRQ, available I/O resources)

When I asked the BA tech support specialist for information on setting
up the connection manually in order to avoid:

* restrictions on which drives the software could be installed in
* disruption of the Netscape registry settings
* wiping out my existing network configuration

he refused. I hope these clarifications will help other potential Bell
Atlantic customers avoid the problems I encountered.
