I had the service when it was AT&T Broadband for two years. During those two years, I only experienced a service outage once and only for a few hours. I felt that this service was phenominal so I referred several friends and others in my neighborhood to use the service. Comcast took over the system and immediately upgraded the connection downstream speed to 3 Mbps, double that of AT&T. I was very amazed that I was getting a fast connection at no extra charge. Of course, all good things come to an end and so did my cable modem service. Shortly after Comcast took over the AT&T system, coincidentally, the service became very lousy for myself as well as my neighbors. At first, Comcast tech support was not very helpful in working towards a resolution. My neighbors, not being technical, were told by Comcast that it was due to their computers, cable modems, etc. and to purchase new ones. I have been able to research the problem and have concluded with the help of Comcast technicians that the problem is severe packet loss at the Comcast node. All of us can get IP addresses. However, when we attempt to browse, one simple web page such as Google will take at least 5 minutes to load. Most of the time, the connection times out. This is worse than a slow dialup connection. When I ping a website, such as google.com, I will send 10 packets to the site and only 3 packets come back. Comcast has sent several techs to my home. One tech/engineer stated that she was not qualified to fix the issue because it is beyond the scope of her knowledge. She stated that Comcast would send someone else to fix it but nobody came out. Other techs have stated that it is a problem that they can do nothing about and it will fix itself. So far this problem has occurred almost everyday for the past four months. To give Comcast credit, they did send out two engineers who were able to temporarily fix the problem but it occurred again 3 days later. After that incident, Comcast has stopped sending out engineers. Now, when anyone on this node calls, Comcast states that the area is experiencing an outage and it should be resolved shortly. The problem does resolve itself but occurs again about 2 days later. Comcast has also stated that the AT&T Broadband system is very old and these problems are expected. I have found out that this problem has been affecting several neighborhoods in Dunwoody and Sandy Springs. For those of you that are not familiar with Atlanta, this is something that Comcast should take seriously. BellSouth, the dominant baby bell in the South, is based here in Atlanta and claims over 40% of the consumer broadband market in the Atlanta area with their DSL service. Earthlink, is also headquartered here and has a significant market share of DSL customers through reselling the BellSouth lines. Comcast, which is the dominant cable provider for Atlanta and most suburbs, only has about 25%. For Comcast to ignore equipment issues and problems that are affecting large groups of customers is a big mistake that will on strengthen market penetration of DSL. Out of frustration, many of my neighbors and friends have switched to DSL due to frustrations from the service not working properly. As far as I know, they have not had any problems. Since I rely on my cell phone and do not have a land line phone service, I can not get DSL. But, that may change soon because I am tired of not having internet access for the last 4 months. I have pleaded with Comcast and have been very polite over the phone despite the inconsiderate service I receive. I am to the point now that I am ready to complain to my local municipality and to the board of directors as a last ditch effort to bring attention to this matter. This is not intended to be a slanderous post against Comcast. But, if you are in the Atlanta area, I recommend that you chose BellSouth instead of Comcast. If the problem starts occurring in your area, Comcast does not seem to take these problems seriously.
