It's been a couple years since I last updated this review. I have to say the service has been stellar. I had 2 outages which were storm related. One was a neighborhood outage that lasted for 12 hours after lightening took out the node. The other was a lightening strike that took out my modem. Comcast replaced the modem without a problem unlike when my DSL modem was killed a few years ago. Speeds rock. I have never seen a slowdown of any sort.

A couple years ago DSL became available in my area. I had new phone service installed along with DSL. AT&T DSL was much slower and had more downtime in a year than I had in 4 with Comcast. I canceled the DSL and phone as soon as the year contract was done.

Maybe if AT&T rolls out something like FIOS, my subdivision is all fiber, I might take another look at it. For now you couldn't pry me away from Comcast.

Another speed upgrade is slated to be completed this summer. At first I was excited about it. I then read that if I want this upgrade I have to pay an additional $10 on top of the $10 I already pay for the 6/768 tier because I am not a catv subscriber. This leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I don't have a problem paying extra because I don't have catv. I have a problem when they want to double the extra I have to pay. I don't want Comcast tv service. I had it and it wasn't worth the money. Local channels were snowy and premium prices were too high. When satellite tv came to be I had it installed and 8 years later still have it. Maybe catv is better now, but, I'm not ready to switch back from sat to find out.

As far as the connection goes it is still fast and reliable. I am very impressed with the service. I don't know how long I will stay with it. DSL is now available. I didn't even think about switching when I got the mail telling me my community is now DSL ready from SBC a couple months back. Now I think it is time to go with the cheaper option. Sure I'll lose half my download and 1/4 of my upload. I'll save $40 or more a month by switching.

Thanks Comcast for a reliable and fast connection. You will lose me as a customer if it is fact that it will cost me if I want the next upgrade.

I've had service for over a month now and I have no complaints. No slowdowns, no packet loss, just a very fast and stable connection.

I just upgraded to 4/384 for an extra $10 a month. I did this so I can get the 6/768 upgrade when Comcast rolls out the upgrades later this month. The speeds are 3900+ down and 340+ up. The upgrade was painless. Logged in to support chat, told the OP I wanted to upgrade, gave him my account info and a few minutes later the modem rebooted and new speeds in effect. He didn't have any info about when Comcast will roll out the new speeds in Illinois. In the Comcast forum people are saying 26 Jan 2005 for some areas. I'm watching that thread for someone from Illinois to post a date.

I'm loving Comcast more and more.

I had DSL for 5 years. I moved to a new house in an area that doesn't have DSL available.

I have to say I am impressed with the performance of my cable. I had SBC 3/384 and Speakeasy 6/768 DSL. My Comcast connection of 3/256 beats SBC and isn't much slower on speed tests then the Speakeasy line. All the speed test I did are in the 2900+ range with the highest being 3147. SBC was in the 2500 range and Speakeasy was in the 4800 range. It is nice to pay for 3 megs and actually download at or near that speed.

I ordered service on 2 Dec 2004 at Comcast site. I picked the install date of 9 Dec 2004 the day after we moved in the new house. The next day I got an email confirming the order and 2 days later got a phone call to verify someone would be home. The install window was from 9AM to Noon. Installer arrived at 10:30AM. Since the house is new it had no cable coming into the house. The installer put a box on the house and then laid out the cable to the box. He then ran the cable to my office. Did a nice neat and clean job making sure to hide as much of it as he could and did a good job installing the wall plate in the house. I wasn't sure where I was going to set up my desk so I asked him to make the cable to connect to the modem long enough to reach each wall. He did that without a problem.

I had my laptop sitting on the floor, I still had a lot of unpacking to do, and he used that to reg the modem. He surfed to a couple sites to make sure everything was OK . I signed the work order for him and he was on his way. Total time it took him to install everything was about 1 1/2 hours. I expected it to take longer since the Direct TV guy was here 5 hours installing the TV service.

Getting back to the speed. I heard that during peak times cable can slow down if your node is overloaded. I don't know how many people are hooked up in the neighborhood, but, I have yet to see a slowdown. Will it stay that way? I don't know. I do know one thing. If I knew cable was this good I would have used it instead of DSL. I had no complaint with DSL, but I like getting the speed I pay for and not 80% of it like I did with DSL.

The only thing I miss about not having DSL is my servers. If DSL ever comes available in my area I will get it installed so I can bring my servers back home and will keep Comcast for my wife..
