Still with Cox, as I have been now in some form or another since 2001. I also now have their digital phone service and very happy with it. The premier tier is now 12/1. AT@T can't touch that!
11/30/05 - Still with the same provider (Cox HSI) after the @Home collapse in 2001. Upgraded my package to Premier (5/768) in 2004. Now my area set for 9/1 speeds and are quite good right now (about 10/1). I pay 54.95 now, but with the new speed increase, I feel it's worth it. Had some problems in the summer, but those were finally resolved. Evidently it was a hardware problem that was not isoloated to myself.
I had been a customer of Southwestern Bell DSL since April of 2000. Actually, cable was my first choice, but I was informed at that time (April 2000) that my neighborhood was not currently connected. So I opted for something better than dialup, which in my case, was SBC DSL.
As my service contract was about to expire, I was notified by Cox @home that my neighborhood finally had connectivity to internet access. Woohoo! My brother has had it since October of 1999 and absolutely loves it.
I was able to call on a Monday and order it, they said they could come out the very next day!! I told them that was a bit too early, and asked them if I could schedule it for that Friday, which they replied "not a problem". Scheduled for between 8 AM and 10 AM Friday morning. At 8:15 AM, the tech called and asked if it was alright for him to come on out and install. Not a problem, I replied.
The install tech was very professional and seemed very knowledgable...the only problem was once he had everything hooked up, the cablemodem wouldn't work. No connection. He couldn't make it work. He was fortright and told me that I would probably hear from his supervisor within the next hour...his supervisor came out, and checked the line at the box...in the driving rain no less. I then received a call from him and he said he would do some other tests, and would come out the next morning (a Saturday) to do some more if it wasn't working Friday evening.
Saturday morning the install techs supervisor came out, laptop in hand and worked a bit on the laptop. He then concluded that the first modem I had was bad...a Surfr model, I think. He then produced a Toshiba PCX1100, called in the new MAC address and told me it would be maybe two hours before it was in the system. Guess what? It took about five minutes for me to have a connection!
Bottom line is, from order to install, @home service in Tulsa was very professional and courteous, and even came out on Saturday morning to help with a problem that took all of about five minutes to overcome. I would recommend to anyone in this area who can to jump all over this ISP. I have only had one outage in 5 weeks of connection, and that only lasted about 30 minutes.
My connections (after tweaking) have been rock-solid on the test servers around 2500 down 290 up....after having DSL (capped at 384k at that), I'm now in broadband nirvana.
Say goodbye to Southwestern Bell....@home is where it's at!

| Cox/AtHome vs SBCDSL At the time, my line didn't support anything over 384. My point was that I had DSL as a stop-gap during the period in which Cox Cable was doing the digital rebuild. As soon as they offered it in my area, I jumped at it.
Also, numerous bunglings of my billing contributed to me wanting to leave.
I'd update this review, but I can't change the ISP from @Home to Cox..at least nowhere that I can see it to be done. | |
