Cox has made some strides to improve the quality of their service since @Home folded and they took over. Latency from time to time, but overall a good service. The monthly cost includes Cable modem rental, television service and two additional IP addresses.
Cox however, has recently blocked outbound SMTP traffic (in an attempt to control hosts with smtp server vulnerabilities) thus you must use their mailservers for outbound email (unless you tunnel SSL to you mailserver or use a VPN connection). My gripe with their decision is that they also force me to comply with a 5mb email message size, whereas my server at work that I previously used allowed for 32mb. Not a real big deal, but slightly annoying.
Cox has also imposed bandwidth restrictions on customers, seems they have oversold their pipe, realize this, and are making up for it by penalizing the home users.

Well, the system was kind enough to remind me that I had not updated my review in at least 6 months, so here's an update.
In my last review I was unhappy about the SMTP blocking, specifically that I couldn't send large files in email. I'm happy to report that Cox has unblocked SMTP outbound to my work mailserver, so I can shuttle larger files that way, avoiding Cox's SMTP server.
I have not experienced any major outages, and only a few ocassions where I was experiencing noticable speed problems.
I have read where Cox plans (or is doing so) faster speed tiers, but either I'm looking in the wrong place, or it's not available here yet. Here's the pricing page for Hampton Roads: »www.cox.com/hr/highspeedinternet···cing.asp
I would pay a few dollars more to increase my upload speed, it would make a big difference when I have ocassion to telecommute.
Overall, I'm still happy. Thumbs up.

It's been a while since I updated my ISP review...
Back in February of this year Cox upped the tiers from 4/512 and 5/768 to 5/2 and 15/2. This of course is in response to the Verizon fiber rollout in the area, but I won't complain. In preparation I upgraded to the premier package so that when upgrades were completed I had the 15/2 tier.
Immediately after the upgrade I had problems getting my speeds to where they needed to be. I had to replace my older Linksys cable modem with a Motorola SB-5120 right off the bat, the Cox folks told me that my old modem wouldn't be able to do the full 15mbps down. Also had several truck rolls to check signal strength to no avail.
Just when I was at the end of my rope, [user=coxtech1] (who I had been working closely with throughout this whole ordeal) came through and got me all patched up by having my modem configuration redone. Hats off to him.
Things have pretty much leveled off and I'm a happy customer. Even though I would love to see the upload speeds bumped up a bit, I am very pleased with the new download speeds.
