Since the end of the Middle America Cox (M.A.C.) era in October, 2004, Cox has made a number of improvements to the system. While we are not working with the same rates or speeds where FIOS-type competition exists, we are at least on par with the majority of other Cox customers.
Since the change tech support has improved dramatically. The people in the Kansas support office are very helpful and knowledgable. However, my last experience with the Cox.com "chat support" system about a year ago will probably be my last ever attempt to use that particular service. Cox performed maintenance to separate other systems for sale to another provider. My D/L speed went up from 4 to 5 Mbps, then dropped to 300kbps (yes, 300 k bps) and stayed there all day. The Kansas call center people were very polite and helpful. The "chat support" people were rude and condescending, and insisted there was no network problem. Their answer was for me to buy a new modem. 3 days later, a Cox truck parks under a pole a mile or two away, and my stuff "miraculously" works just fine again.
The biggest plus for us lately has been the addition of phone service. SBC has shown absolutely no interest in providing us with DSL (despite the installation of the necessary hardware 3 years ago - I have photos of the Stinger box...), so when Cox offered phone service we switched. It's VoIP, using an Arris MTU, and works just like our old POTS did, for less money each month. Installation was done by a Cox technician, who was on time, and completed the installation professionally and promptly. Thanks, Cox!
