Update 06.16.2007:

Its been several days since the change to Cox Business Services and I must say, just as solid as ever. Nice, clean, totally unfiltered ports till my heart is content.

The only problem I ran into with them was the transitioning of my residential account to a business account. That took nearly eight days despite being told they could change it over more quickly, which delayed getting changed from the port blocked, DHCP-based residential service..

Update 06.01.2007:

Switched the connection from residential service to the Business Services group... The transition should be pretty quick. The only painful part was having to unpack the fax machine to send in the contract documents. As well, I'm going to be going from 9Mbps with Powerboost down to 7Mbps without Powerboost, but I really wasn't noticing that much of a difference between the two speeds anyway. It will be nice to have a static IP and unfiltered ports though.

An update will follow when everything come together from CBI.

Update 05.25.2007:

It looks like everyone in the New Orleans area just got a free upgrade in speed from 7Mbps to 9Mbps on the Preferred package. At first I wasn't able to get the proper speed, so I checked with support to make sure that I had been re-provisioned properly. Once they checked my modem and said that everything looked fine, they tried to say that my Cisco router was the cause of the problem. Turns out that I was still tweaked with the 7Mbps connection only. Now I'm getting the 9Mbps plus Powerboost.

Very nice...

Original Review:

I ordered service from Cox via their website on April 20th, 2007. Their site provided ample information that would be useful to far less technically inclined computer users in making a decision on which level of service to purchase. The ordering system, however, is slightly convoluted but once I got it figured out, I was able to order their 7Mbps / 512kbps package. I opted for the free professional installation since the house I was moving into did not have cable services yet and so I'm currently paying for the modem, a Scientific Atlanta Webstar, over three months.

The installer arrive on the 29th of April within the first 45 minutes of the install window and went right to work. He did a very professional job with the wiring on the side of the house, including grounding it all correctly. All in all, the visit lasted about 30 minutes and when he left, everything was working perfectly.

I've now had the service for nearly one month and can state that Cox is offering a high quality product. My previously experience with Cox's internet services left me not at all impressed, but I'm glad they have improved. The speed is consistent and my connection has been reliable since it was turned on. The Powerboost feature is a nice novelty, however, it doesn't provide a long enough boost to be of a lot of use to me since the files I typically download (patches, software updates, etc. for work) are too large for it.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the service. I'll be staying with the current service level until such time as I have paid off the modem and then I will likely switch to their SOHO package from the Business Services group. I need the static IP and wide open ports.
