Previously I had Comcast, reliability was very good though installation was a pain and there was no competition to go to for lower prices or better upload.
I got Cox after moving to Virginia. The choices here are Verizon DSL and Cox Cable internet. DSL only goes to 1.5M/384k or so I'm told, my landlord says its very reliable though. He told me Cox wasn't as reliable but was faster.
I compared both, and I couldn't resist the lure of faster speeds. I called up Cox asking what they had, they told me about the 3 tiers. 5/2 is the middle tier, there is also a 15/2 surprisingly for not much more money. Of course they offered their other services like digital voice and cable TV, but weren't pressuring me when I said I only wanted internet for now. They gave me the first 2 months for $10, I didn't have to ask for the discount, and there is no yearlong contract... cancel at anytime. Same price for internet if I got TV or not. Comcast was like $29 the first 3 months and $56 after that for 6/768.
I could have picked up the cable modem the same day but I had a lot of stuff to do from the moving. Their service centers were open to 8PM, I got my modem a few days later only had to show ID. Self install was easy because the system already recognized my modem, I just plugged it in and plugged my router into it. This brings up one downside, their compatibility list is small compared to Comcast. I suspect my original cable modem would have worked, but since it didn't cost me anything I went with one they provided. I wonder how they would have handled me bringing my own cable modem.
The speeds were true to the advertisement, I'm that much closer to the speeds of college days. 2Mbit upload is really nice for posting things online, 5Mbit download has been plenty even with 3 roomates. I haven't had any service problems, my router has hiccupped a few times but it did that with Comcast as well so I think its my hardware. It's only been 2 months but 100% uptime as far as I can tell. No slowdowns at primetime either.
I'm sure my experience was easier since the house was already wired for cable, and I got a new cable modem from them. The pricing and service has been great.
