++UPDATE: 3/4/2009
I was recently notified of a DSL deal of $27.95 a month for 6.0 Xtreme package through AT&T. I was tempted to switch but decided to call Earthlink (Brighthouse) first prior to doing so. They gave me a $29.95 price again for 6 months along with a direct line to request another 6 months promotion when this one is up. That is quality customer service (on Brighthouse and Earthlink) and I'm happy I stuck with them.
Service has been flawless. Everything just works.

So I made the switch away from Earthlink and to RoadRunner and then eventually to FastAccess DSL again and regret it. I recently switched BACK to Earthlink and I'm very happy I did. Friendly service, great rate for the first 6 months and reliable service. I originally switched away because of a discounted rate from RoadRunner but will stick with Earthlink.
Solid service, couldn't be happier.
++UPDATE: 1/13/2006
I have been using my cable connection on a daily basis and haven't witnessed one bit of down time. I must say that I regret my comment on "my FastAccess connection being more stable". Although my DSL connection was stable, this connection has been flawless since my first problems with the installation. I couldn't ask for more from my internet connection. Fast speeds (even during peak times) and 6mbps+ late nights and early mornings.
I ended up adding Cable TV to my package and got more of a discount on my bill. I have recommended cable to many of my friends and couldn't be happier. Go Brighthouse and Go Earthlink!
++UPDATE: 12/12/2005
Still a solid connection. I don't think i've had any down time whatsoever. The connection is very quick (even during peak hours) and even faster in late night- usually about 6Mbps (on 5Mbps account). I love my connection so much that i've decided to switch to VoIP.
If you can get Earthlink High Speed Cable- get it!
++UPDATE: 9/17/2005
Our connection has been somewhat stable - however I must admit that it hasn't been as stable as my FastAccess DSL connection in this area. We are seriously considering switching to Bellsouth's 6.0Mbps package when it comes out in October. I have received another $20 credit on our bill ($9.99 for first three months so far) due to a major slow down in our area in the past couple of days. Turns out they were upgrading (which I found out on my own) and not one technician on the phone informed me of this. It did end up getting better (I believe it was an upgrade in the Tampa Bay area). Either way, customer support is very poor:
Earthlink rep sent me an e-mail to test my connection to see how "fast" I got it. This rep was very misinformed and I could not believe she was actually a customer service rep to begin with. No offense to her but she was not knowledgable whatsoever. She was like a lost puppy. Her final answer to me was: "Maybe it'll be better tomorrow, lets hope so." Again, she never mentioned an upgrade of any type.
I'm not encouraging anyone to stay away as each area has different experiences - I would suggest testing the waters before you commit to anything.
++ORIGINAL REVIEW: 6/25/2005
Service has been good for first couple of hours. I will post updates every few months. I have switched from DSL to Earthlink Cable and so far i'm happy. Installation was HELL (Brighthouse).
Timeline
Thursday, 6/16 Installer from Brighthouse arrives to install service. Service doesn't work and says that "tap needs to be serviced, it's backwards". Says that he will have someone out the next day to fix it.
Friday, 6/17 No one arrives - I call and i'm told we're scheduled for Monday.
Monday, 6/20 No one arrives - i'm told that our appt. is for Tuesday.
Tuesday, 6/21 No one arrives - i'm told that our appt is for Wednesday.
Wednesday, 6/22 Very frustrated, spoke with a supervisor about the headache and assured me that it would get resolved. Carlos in Orlando gave me his direct line and told me to call with any problems on Thursday. Someone checks the tap and it's fine but still no service.
Thursday, 6/23 Call Carlos and told him of frustrations. Was given a credit on account. Scheduled appt. for Saturday, 6/25 to have line looked at. Was asked if i'd like to be called if the technician can come earlier - I said yes and gave my phone #.
Exchanged modem with another one at local office (Brighthouse) - does not resolve problem. I also change my appt. from Saturday to Friday 1 to 4PM. My girlfriend and I both work together so we both took time away from work to wait for technician at home. I came back to work while GF was at home. Missed a call on cell phone at 3:30 stating that technician had word to "call beforehand". They didn't receive an answer so I must now reschedule. I call up furiously and reschedule for Sunday from 10AM to 1PM.
Saturday, 6/24 Receive phone call asking how our "service" has been from corporate headquarters. Gave them an earful and was told that we had an appt. on Sunday 6/26 from 10AM to 1PM and that they would follow up.
Sunday, 6/25 12:30pm - Called Brigthouse to confirm appt and turns out we were down at 1PM to 4PM. Spoke to supervisor again and was "apoligized" too and told we would have someone out right away.
1:35PM - Technician arrives. Checks a few things and fines a bad connection at end of wire outside the house. Replaced and up and running
THE END.
I was very unhappy with the installation but do not blame Earthlink for this.
