06/02/2008 UPDATE: Ok, I did finally find a notice in the forums that our d/l speed was going to get bumped from 5 to 7. Sure wish upload speed would have gotten bumped.

06/01/2008 UPDATE: Last night I did a bandwidth test with speakeasy.net and download speed result was over 6800!! I don't remember any notice that our d/l speed was getting upgraded, but thought I'd document the increased speed. One point I do want to mention but haven't fully tested is there appears to be a possible reduction in latency. I have noticed some additional "artifacts" when talking on our VOIP, and maybe even a visual speed problem on web pages. Again, untested, but did want to mention it.

FYI, our Earthlink service uses TimeWarner's local lines, so some of the reliability should go to TimeWarner. We have a solid connection, typically around 4800/343 for our 5M/384k connection. Downtime is very minimal - just experienced a small amount of downtime, probably due to some workers burying a cable nearby. We've had this service for almost 6 years and have no trouble.
When we first attempted to try VOIP with Earthlink TrueVoice, we experienced numerous problems. One recommendation was for us to have our internet service checked. We called and had TimeWarner come out and check our connection. Interesting point was we told them we were experiencing dropped calls on our internet phone, and I may have even told them it wasn't THEIR internet phone. The expedited the trouble ticket and a worker was at our house that afternoon. They checked the line and said there was a very minor loss of quality, so they replaced every cable end from the street to the cable modem. I couldn't see much difference in speed tests after they were done, but I was very content with their service. FYI, it didn't help the VOIP because the problems were due to the VOIP provider.
The reason I chose to use Earthlink instead of RoadRunner is simply the fact that Earthlink is a couple $$ cheaper. In fact, for my area, RR is $46.95 base price and Earthlink is $41.95 base price. Same service of 5M/384k.
