At a time when everybody else is offering higher speeds and upgrading their technology, WOW is doing the opposite. More money and bullshit fees for no added performance.

Wide Open West? ISP Woes

I am on the south side of Chicago and have had service limitations based on my location for a long time now. For about 2 years when broadband was starting to come in, I was consistently told by ATT Broadband, Ameritech, Earthlink, etc I was either not serviceable because there weren't nodes in the area or I was out of range for DSL length. Then one day I contacted Ameritech and was told I could have SpeedPath Plus Business DSL 1.5 down / 256k up installed and it was done -- worked flawlessly. Always very close to advertised speed. When the installer set it up, he told me I was about 14,500 feet from the CO. After about 10 months, it began running very slow and disconnecting a lot, for days at time sometimes. After fighting with Ameritech for about a month or two, I canceled and signed up with Speakeasy DSL...who supposedly could service me, stating I was under 18,000 feet. They placed the order with Covad, but it was canceled because I all of a sudden was rated at 25,300 or some feet. Soonafter, I contacted Earthlink, who said they could service me. Their databases, as well as their line tests suggested I was about 14,000 feet and they'd have me up in about a week. The connection comes up, disconnects often, and runs VERY slow (almost as slow as DIAL-UP) all the time. Their support is horrible. When I had them troubleshoot the problem, they said that they contact Covad. Covad says I'm 25,000 or so feet from the CO. They tell me to contact the telephone company to find out from the "engineering dept" if they could find out if lines were changed or something. Round and round in circles.
I've been with Earthlink for about 4 months and am neither happy nor willing to give the service up. If I get rid of it, I'm back on dial-up....and if I stay with it, I get unreliable, slow DSL for $64.99 a month (static IP).
Now my friend came over yesterday and showed me this flyer for Wide Open West cable internet and upon contacting them, I'm told I can get cable internet for $54.99 / month including basic cable TV as well. Most of the people in the area have AT&T Broadband and when I check with ATT they tell me they cannot provide cable internet -- nodes aren't in the area. However, using the same lines, Wide Open West can?
I'm confused. Please help.

WOW is ridiculous... don't believe the hype.

Yeah, Comcast is horrible. After MediaOne was lost to Comcast's crap, I was looking for ANYTHING to escape... I tried Earthlink DSL, that was horrible seeing as how they went ahead and signed me up knowing I was 16,000 feet from the closest covad.

Then WOW appeared out of nowhere. Great! A very nice alternative to Comcast. Superb upload and download speed. True 1500/768... for the first few months, that is.

Then what happens? Billing errors left and right. I get a bill out of NOWHERE (and mind you, I keep current with my bill), for $300. This was in September 2002 and I'm STILL having problems because the idiots don't know how to adjust it properly...

Then my internet connection goes out for almost a week. I'm stuck on hold for nearly 1.5-2 hours A DAY before I get sick of waiting and I hang up.. only to call back the next day to experience the same thing.

The only way I got things to get done is by talking to a supervisor and explaining "Look, if you don't straighten you crap out, I'm cancelling." AND I'M STILL HAVING PROBLEMS.

What a lame ISP.

There's no winner. There's no perfect ISP. They're all out for your money and nothing but... they don't care about quality, they don't care about fixing annoying problems such as lack of service and/or billing. They don't care about providing better service than their competitors... so all we're stuck with is CRAP.

Comcast is lame and so is WOW. Honestly, I don't know which I'd pick... I'm currently with WOW, but I'm thinking of switching back and forth every few months so I can take advantage of their "Switch from our competitor and pay only $29.99 a month" deals over and over.

Face it... money rules everything, quality is long forgotten.

WOW

I love my Wow service and price.

The best part is if/or I call support EVERYONE SPEAKS ENGLISH. I have my question answered in seconds because we can communicate by understanding what we are saying to each other.

Keep us the good work.
