Value for money:
I finally decided to switch from AT&T DSL to Cable. Why?
Because of cable's reliability? A questionable no.
Because it's faster? Most definitely.
Because it's cheaper? *As of July 2011--rate hike to $41.95/mo, so no.*
My 6006 kbps (in reality, 85% of that due to overhead) DSL was fine. It was stable and it was perfect. $25.00 a month. Add an additional $21.00 of useless, unneeded, and never-used AT&T landline... that's over $45 a month for 5.1 Mbps DSL!
Come along San Bruno Municipal Cable Internet. I saw their ad on their website for 12Mbps cable for $37.95 and was shocked. At first, I told myself... they'd fork in a bunch of fees, taxes, and make me pay more for it if I didn't sign up for cable TV. But no, 12Mbps cable internet for $37.95 FLAT a month. No additional fees.. Free modem rental.. and just a $50 one-time installation fee.
I was blown away! They sent a tech out and rewired my whole house to have a dedicated cable line---brand new wiring so supposedly it should have been trouble free.
Nights 1 and 2 with my brand new cable, I had massive packet loss at night and could barely surf text-based websites. I called in their 24/7 free tech support, and they sent a tech out on day 3. They tell me they will monitor the line and do the appropriate adjustments.
I am now getting 12.6 Mbps and 530 down on my provisioned 12.0/512 cable line! Very good! 5/5 stars for everything else, but I had to give 4/5 for connection reliability because I still see congested slowdowns every so often during peak hours. Otherwise, it seems fine now as of this first week with cable internet.
UPDATE 3/1. During presales information i was told that i would not be charged any extra fees. It was supposed to be $ 50 flat installation fee with no additional taxes. Yet when i received my bill they charged me an extra $ 2.50 franchise tax. More updates later to see if they continue to nickel and dime me on my next bill. For this I have reduced their rating slightly.
UPDATE 7/1. Connection is getting wonky again. Massive packet loss. Slow speeds. As of 7/1, San Bruno Cable got rid of their $37.95 (12/0.5) line and replaced it with $41.95 (16/3.0). As of 7/12, I am having varying speed issues at fastest speed I've achieved so far is 15.5/1.5. Don't know what is going on. Opened a trouble ticket with them.
