(This was posted after about 2 weeks with Verizon. See my comments at the end for how it turned out - not well)
After considering the various offerings here in Brooklyn, I decided the path of least resistance would be Bell Atlantic. I called them for info on 2/21 since I was home for President's day and had some time to kill. Since they offered a 30-day trial, I figured I couldn't go too wrong - if it doesn't work, send back the modem and be done with it. Installation was free and the modem was only $99 + shipping + tax. No minimum term either.
So I signed up.
They scheduled the splitter install for Friday. The modem arrived Wednesday. The installer arrived 11am Friday and was done in about an hour. I tried setting up the modem the next day, no luck, called tech support. The guy said that most likely the problem is that they haven't set up my profile correctly (and admitted that it happens more often than one would like) but asked me to try a few things first. I followed his instructions, no luck. He put in a request to HSS and said to try the connection again in 48 hours. I did, it worked.
I have not yet had a disconnect. I usually shut the computer off when not in use but I left it on for a couple of days just to see. No problems... none.
Perhaps I was just lucky (time will tell), but count me as a satisfied customer...
(9 months later...)
I _was_ just lucky and only for a few weeks. By the end of the first month, I was a regular caller to their support and billing lines. Outages were frequent - anything from random disconnects to days without service. Even with this, I stayed with them for 6 months. Why? Well it took Verizon that long to get them to install a line for Mindspring (they are the competition, after all).
Have been with Mindspring now for 4 months and have had only a single outage that I can recall. It was an odd feeling when I realized that I didn't even have Mindspring's support # in my Palm. What a difference!
