One of the first users of DSL going back to February 1999...This got you a (grandfathered) static IP address; and a tech installed Alcatel 1000 modem. Original package was 384 to 1.5 download; and 128-384 upload. Located little over 12,000' from the CO, so speed has always been on the lower end of the spectrum. In 2005, upgraded the Alcatel to a Speedstream 4100 during a service call and speed nearly doubled.
In October of 2007, during a home remodel, the NID was not only relocated, but also replaced. DSL is still split at NID (as it was day 1). All wiring from line to NID; and NID to house (including all internal wiring) were replaced.
With the help of the AT&T Direct forum; we were finally able to eek out an upgrade to Pro which went live today (1/8/8). (Note: a similar upgrade attempt 2 years ago failed and I had to roll back to the slower package.
The end result: I have doubled my speed, retained my grandfathered static IP; and am paying exactly the same price for the new Pro package as I did yesterday for the old package.
How does it compare:
Before the upgrade: Actual = 1.274/324 avg (advertised at 1.5/384).
Upgrade to Pro: Actual = 2.531/442 day 1 (advertised at 3.0/512).
