I needed access at a vacation home and all the plans were $20+ a month and rated poorly by the locals. When I signed up at AT&T for my phone service (only game in town) they offered a $10 a month basic 384/168 plan. Given that what I mostly want to do is check email I jumped on the price even with a 12 month commitment.
When installed I had disconnects and was getting about 120 download, but over 300 upload. I contacted AT&T tech support and they said given the line quality and remoteness of the area (Olympic Valley, CA) that the plan offered did not cut it. They upgraded me with no questions to the 768k/384 plan immediately. I am now getting about 570/300 performance which is better than I expected. After all this is a weekend / vacation place.
The more amazing thing is that I have been a long term SBC critic. If the new AT&T can deliver this price performance consistently they just may have a long term customer.
Update: Upon receiving my first bill I find that they have charged me half the price of the modem for shipping. This was not disclosed and in calling them (SBC/AT&T), they refused to make any accommodations.
While I would sign up again, AT&T has not changed. Buy your equipment from Amazon. They have lost all the positive goodwill from me that their deal gained. I would still sign up as it is the only deal in town I will revert to my long standing distrust of AT&T/SBC.
