I set up using my 10 year old Alcatel modem even though everyone at AT&T insisted I had to use a modem which plugs into a phone jack. After tweaking my connection (I think if I used their modem, then their software may have automated this), I am consistently getting 5.0 download out of 6.0 possible and 635 upload out of 768. We are 3 blocks from the CO, so I would think I should be getting the full pipe. I will wait a while, then call.
Sales lady was pretty well voiced in how the process would go and answered all my questions, including telling me if I was successful in using my existing equipment I can return the Motorola modem they sent to me within 30 days and get a refund. I will mail it tomorrow morning!
I first chatted with, and later called support to get help with no response from their news (NNTP) servers, and it was just a big waste of time. They knew nothing. I figured it out on my own also. Their news server does not appear to carry much content. I am finding many empty newsgroups.
I was able to cut my monthly expenditures for Internet more than half by shutting off my landline and getting a discount on the Elite service since I have cell phones with them. Will probably put some of that back into a good news service.
I am happy with it so far, except that their DHCP servers over PPPoE give me a brand new IP address every time I connect. I would like to get that to be stable, but have no hope so I won't even try.
Hope this helps someone
