Received call from AT&T with an offer to add DSL service ELITE 6.0/768 because I've got a landline and it accessing via a RT and not limited by a too long CO distance.
Sales talked up a storm and finally admitted that I wouldn't qualify for Elite but was promised 3.0/512 provisioning with no problems and a minimum 50% thru put of provisioned speed guaranteed. Nice operation- guarantee you 50% of what you are paying for just to receive the next tier lower performance
Placed order and time to provisioning notice was good, about a week 02-20-2009.
Received a refurbished Motorola 2210 modem all for the low low price of 49.95 plus 12.95 shipping and the do it yourself install kit in three days. They don't tell you they sell you cheap refurbs at new list price.Hopefully my rewards check will pay for this over-priced refurb unit.
Thursday 02-20-2009 came and went with no DSL synch and I could not load the self install software/registration because no DSL. A tech actually came to the house checked the line at the NID and at the F1 Box. Lo and behold DSL signal not even reaching the F1 box much less the NID.Tech returned that day and informed me he couldn't do anything because no one at the CO would respond to phone calls to check the provisioning again and said I had to call support the following day to address this. The excuse supplied by AT&T the next day to me was "The computer said" it was taken care of. Multiple calls to inept incompetent phone support for the next 10 days ended up with at least three trouble tickets open and closed without a single action item. After a very intense engagement with "Customer Service" 10 days after the provisioning successful notice, a senior tech came to the house, verified that finally a dsl signal was being received and then informed me that there was NO WAY I would ever get 3.0/512 and that the provisioning I did receive was a custom one with a 2.0 Cap on the downside due to only 47% signal quality and approx 400 kb on the upside. Basically just another come on from sales to get people to bite. The only good thing about this is the experienced tech who came out, was upfront and straight with me on this. Knew what he was doing and even fixed a potential performance inhibitor in my install (my bad). Initial thru put test are in the 1.5-1.6 MB and 400 kb on the upload. Word of advice for my geography- Don't expect anything close to what AT&T tells you about performance/download upload speeds; Expect less than they promise and have a LOT of patience and you'll live longer. If Dave the AT&T guy is monitoring this forum, let me tell you that AT&T is missing the boat in our neighborhood. Comcast is cleaning your clock even as bad as they are to deal with. spend some money and upgrade your infrastructure and you might get people to go with Cell, TV, Internet and Phone.
