ATT 6 down / 768k up DSL plan. Speeds are consistently 5-6Mb down, and 600-768k up.

They try to make you use a crappy 2wire modem/router combination and charge you for per-computer connections. You can just ignore that crap and use your own DSL modem + router. It just good ol' PPoE DSL.

DSL is very smooth and solid. Connection is not shared like a cable modem connection and stays very consistent. Good for skype or other voip usage. Only 6 down, but good enough for hulu, and a house hold of heavy internet users.

I'm paying $40/month for DSL only - no phone line. A bit pricey, but not many choices where I am.

Customer service are only desk clerks reading from a script in front of them. They have NO technical knowledge. ATT does not have technical people available to talk to over the phone, so might call your family tech support person first vs. calling ATT.

ATT service person I talked to once had no idea what a 'gateway' was, when I mentioned the DSL modem was not picking up a gateway. That word is not on the script in front of him, so he was clueless.

    Techie stuff:

    bittorrent is not filtered
ports are not blocked if you are interested in running your own Linux server stuff. 22, 80, 443, 995, 587/465, etc all open and ok.

    haha

Not all people that work for att at the dsl tech support center, are as NULL as you describe! I have worked there for coming 5 years now, and I do have a computer science degree, and am very tech savvy! Maybe you just spoke to somebody new, who was unsure of what you were referring to! You might call it a "gateway" and in att terms its considered something totally different!

    The 2wire

is just a supplied modem and router in one. It's always "your choice" if you want to use one or not. I don't think they charge per computer connection with the 2wire. That would be a bit extreme.

So far to date I haven't seen anyone charged "per computer" just for using a 2wire.
