Well I finally took the broadband plunge. I signed-up for residential level one service with Advanced Stream, one of the three ISPs that use our municipal cable network, Click!. Level one service is offered at 1M/128kbps; I am getting between 900kbps and 1.4Mbps down and 168kbps to 190 kbps up. Average ping is about 69 msec.
At 29.95 per month, Click! Internet through Advanced Stream use to be an outrageous value when the caps were set at up to 2 Mbps/256kbps. However with the reduction is speed on March 11 I would have to rate level one service as being an excellent value. I know we're spoiled.
BTW, cable TV is NOT REQUIRED to get the $29.95 per month price.
Well it's been a few years now. The tier one service seems to be stuck with no increase in speed for the last several years, while the other service levels have enjoyed a couple of speed increases thanks to the Comcast competition raising their service speeds.
For the most part, the connection has been reliable, with only a couple of outages this year.
Customer service is OK as long as you call during regular business hours. If you need service after hours, then you're out of luck, even though the service agreement that I've seen between the ISP and Click! requires the ISP to have 24 hour customer service. Apparently Click! does not enforce the contract.
At about 30 bucks, they are barely cheaper then Qwest. If this ISP raises their price, I think I'll move to Qwest.
