I'll certainly edit this if I have problems, but I called the very first day that a new Remote Terminal was enabled for my subdivision. That was a Monday. I had DSL up and running by Saturday afternoon the same week. (I had to pay for a technician install since I was getting the static IP package.)
I know two neighbors who went with dynamic self-install packages. One had his in 5 days, the other experienced two delays, but still had it in under 2 weeks. All three of us are very happy with the results.
Originally went with the 1500/256 package, but upgraded to the 3000+/384+ package, which is actually (6000/608) about two weeks later. It took 6 days from call to full upgrade. I had the faster upload available in 3 days.
If you can avoid it, do not use their install CD-ROM. It loads too much useless, buggy junk. I've already helped two neighbors clean theirs off.
1.5 Year Update: The above was my review after first getting dsl. I've had it for a year and a half. Except for the headaches of straightening out billing issues I could not be happier. The few times I have dealt with tech support have been quite pleasant, and I can't say enough about the results from the BroadBandReports "SBC Direct" forum.
I have a brother-in-law that has a cable modem. DSL is so much nicer.
2 Year Update: Had DSL for 2 years now. At my last re-up of the 1 year contract, the price was reduced. Old price was 99.95. New price is 79.99 for 3 months and 89.99 for the 9 after that, which works out to about 87.50/month over the term of the contract.
In the course of the 2 years, I cannot say enough about the great support I've had via the SBC/Ameritech forum here and the SBC Direct forum. I have had no better customer service experience with any large corporation.
4 Year Update: It's been nearly 4 years now. Service has been great. The only complaint I have with AT&T was the one time it took a week to repair a POTS line, but my dsl continued to work, though degraded during that time. I have recommended AT&T dsl at work and we have put in four lines. I keep trying to convince my neighbor to switch to cable from his AT&T DSL so that if one of us has an outage we can use the others wireless, but he will have none of it.
