I received my self install kit. After hours with tech support trying to get the NIC card to recognize the modem, I gave up and went to bed. The fix was to reinstall my software, including firewall, that SBC's software corrupted. Tech support was nice but not helpful. I know the script by heart.
The reason that I am giving up on SBC is they did not send me the packet that I signd up for. On line, they offerred 384k to 1.5m. My package is limited to 384k max. Now they tell me that I am too far from a switch to get what was promised. I can stand on my porch and just about throw a rock and hit the switch.
It seems that some of SBC's system identifies the switch, and some does not. One rep told me that I was so close that my download spead should be 1.3m. Other reps say that I am so far away from a switch that I should not be able to connect.
I would love to have DSL, but SBC has turned out to be a horror story. PCMagazine's article says they do very bad service. I wish that I had believed.
