My fiancee and I moved in together to a new home, and she brought her DSL along with her. We called SBC to get the service transferred to the new phone number, and we were told that there was a $100 connection charge. Now, I did not understand this, because she was already in a contract, she just simply moved to a new home (a mile down the street), and were charged $100 to re-connect the service. I spent a hour escalating my complaint up the "ladder", and it only got as far as the Manager of Billing. He basically said there was nothing I could do. I threatened to cancel my service and that I would not pay the $175 cancellation charge, and he warned me not to do so.

Fine, I'll pay the $100 connect fee. Done. I go to connect the hardware, and get a blinking light on the modem for the DSL. Bottom line, a Technician visit had to be setup. This cost me $60 for a guy to come out and look at the phone jack box on the outside of my house. The resolution ended up being a new 2Wire HomePortal. Luckily, I was not charged for the modem, but $60 on top of the $100 re-connect fee, I'm already at $160.

The service was finally up and running. However, it would time out pages and pings ever y 10 minutes. What ended up happening was they bumped up my Download rate to 1 Mbps (from the default 768 Kbps). This resolved the problem alas.

Since these initial troubles, I have not had any outages, and the service has been very reliable. However, pages hang constantly, especially Yahoo pages (I assume this is SBC's fault because of the SBC-Yahoo garbage merger). I have called to inquire several times about these Yahoo sites, and nobody seems to have a resolution.

SBC Yahoo, although cheap, is unreliable and the company is a monopoly that locks you into contracts with no way out. As soon as this contract is up, it's back to RoadRunner for us.
