I had Earthlink DSL for many years with 1.5 max download speed and only switched to SBC (their name at the time) 3 1/2 years ago for they told me I was close enough to get up to 3.0 download speed. I was given a free SpeedStream 5100 modem (which still works fine). However, when I hooked it up (which was very easy and I didn't load the Yahoo software and instead did it manually with the help of Tech Support), my speed was terrible so it took a couple of weeks for SBC to figure it out (took about 14 days), and they finally had to downgrade me to 1.5 max. So, it was cheaper than Earthlink (I think it was either $12.95 or $14.95 at the time), but I had the same speed as with Earthlink. However, I had much less latency than with Earthlink, and was happy. Finally, about one year ago, they added a Hub somewhere and I was able to upgrade to Pro for $24.95 and get 3.0 max. However, I only connect at about 2.2. I contacted Customer Service about 3 months ago and they told me that I was now close enough to get Elite for $34.95 and connect at 5.0 max. However, when they made the switch, I had terrible latency and finally found out from Tier 2 Tech Support and DSL Maintenance that I was still too far away (NOTE: ALWAYS CONTACT TIER 2 TECH SUPPORT OR YOUR LOCAL DSL MAINTENANCE OFFICE TO CHECK YOUR DISTANCE FROM THE CO BEFORE YOU UPGRADE. DON'T RELY ON WHAT CUSTOMER SERVICE SAYS). They told me that they still needed to add another Hub to get me close enough to get Elite. They then switched me back to Pro and I am back to about 2.2 speed but am happy enough at the price with very little latency. I cannot get cable in my building, or would probably switch to Roadrunner for the faster speed and pay more per month.

4/08 AT&T/Yahoo DSL always worked well, but I just switched to Roadrunner for the faster speed, even though it costs more.
