When storms knocked out a electricity and cable TV access in our area, the telephone still worked. When the electricity was turned back on, the cable TV was still out. If the cable TV isn't working, neither is cable based internet. However, since the telephone never went down, I was able to connect with my DSL while friends/family/neighbors that had cable for internet were left in the dark.
It seems despite the many "acts of God" that happen, telephone landlines still seem to be "old reliable" in my book. And with my DSL running over those lines, it's reliable too.
