Upgraded an old pacbell dsl line ($49.99 1 static ip - about 768Kbps) to a faster plan: (49.99, 3.0Mbps, 5 static ips). I had the old pacbell dsl plan from when it initially became available 8? years ago. I believe that a static ip was standard. The "10,000 feet from the CO" rule was in full effect.
At some point, pacbell ran fiber optics through the neighborhood, Faster speeds at lower prices were available. For my old dsl line "on copper lines" as they put it, it needed to be switched over to the new fiber optic lines if I wanted to take advantage of the faster download packages. There was no cost to me for the switch to the fiber optic system.
A gesture by an SBC employee was very cool. I was informed that in the next few days, my line would be switched over to fiber, and then the installer would come out and finish the dsl install. I was told to expect that my current dsl would be disabled, and I wouldn't have connectivity until the installer completed the install. so potentially 3 days. Sure enough, the next day, the dsl line was disconnected. About an hour later, "someone", a very friendly gal, gave me a call. I'm sorry, I don't remember her role, but i believe she was a field supervisor. She explained that she just called because she was "workin on my order". She reactivated my old dsl line, so I could keep connectivity during the transfer process and minimized my down time. Three days of no connectivity was reduced to about 6 hours.
There was a sales promotion for dsl service at that time offering free installation and a free or discounted router. The installer guy came over, took a screwdriver to a few places, ran tests, and did an initial router setup and config. I had a choice of a free wired or wireless router. I didn't really need one, but it was free with the install. I almost took the wireless router until the install guy recommended the wired one. Good advice because the Netopia Wired Modem/Router is packed with a lot of advanced features not always included in typical or inexpensive hardware for the main-stream dsl user. So I took the Netopia and the install guy hooked it up, and I was connected 10 minutes later. I even remember running speedtest in front of him.
