Initially when we installed the DSL package about 9 years ago, the download speeds and connectivity where very average for a DSL package promising 768-1.5 download speeds. We pretty much maintained a 768k speed and never higher. Due to being about 15,500 FT from the nearest substation AT&T said that is the highest we can receive.
Within the past 9 months, the connectivity has been horrible. The SNR margin been averaging 4.4-6.8 which is like the worse you can get. Constant dropped connections and AT&T has informed us that basically there is nothing they can or will do because we supposedly live "too far" from them. Also at this time they have no plans to ever install Fiber Optic lines in our area even though we live near a major industrial park and residential neighborhoods. So it's not like we live in the boonies somewhere.
Bottom line, if you live towards the end of the loop in their service lines, you will not receive speeds anywhere near what they promised, plus you will not get any guarantees that you can even keep your connection up. But you will pay the same price as the guy who lives closer to the substation getting 4-6 times faster speeds then you and no dropped connections. All you will get is headache after headache calling them on a daily basis to fix their system working properly.

| AT&T DSL unhappy camper
We have AT&T's "Pro" level DSL, which is one of their fastest speed levels offered. It is supposed to have 1.5 mbps - 6 mbps dowstream speeds. It was never been very fast, but recently, it has become extremely slow. So slow, that frequently pages don't even load.
When I test the speed on this site with my computer or my husband's, the speeds vary - last night it tested at 473 kbps downstream speed, which is not unusual. On AT&T's web site, when I test the speed, it clocks in at 1.7 mbps - ha! - which means that they are providing service to us within their agreement.
The customer support ranges from non-existent to extremely difficult to get help. I should have known, installing DSL with them was extraordinarily difficult - involving 7 phone calls by me (several over 1/2 an hour) over three months. I would have given up if they weren't the only provider in my area, and my new home was wired for DSL not cable.
If you are considering AT&T DSL, I recommend that you think long and hard about it - we've had a terrible experience. | |
