The last thing I want to do is pay SBC around 50 bucks for a POTS and LD service. I'm moving, and the roommate wants a home phone. Vonage meets both the cost requirement, and the home phone requirement.
On a Sunday, I went over to the Best Buy. I picked up the Linksys WRT54GP2 Wireless-G Router, and a Uniden DCT646S 2.4Ghz Phone. I get home, power everything down and take out an old Netgear router and install the new Linky. I power everything back up and my cable modem isn't responding. (come to find out that Comcast is having an area outage at the time, which kept me on-and-offline for over 2 hours.)
During one of the On times.. I signed up via vonage.com for the unlimited calling plan. No activation fee. Comcast was on and off for a bit more.. and then finally I got the green light on my Linky stating that the Phone line was up and running.
First call placed was to my dear ole mother. Quiet white noise and then fast busy signal. Attempted a few more calls within the next 15 minutes, all with the fast busy signal. Finally got one out to mother, with quiet white noise and some echo.
For now, I am going to attribute the white noise and echo to my new Uniden. I might take it back for another phone. That's just day one. Will update later.
...update...
everything seems decent enough with the vonage equipment. the ONLY think I don't like is the fact that the phone has to be so close to my router/vonage box. I live in an apartment, so doing a vonage rewire isn't really an option. but.. if you want an alternative to high cell phone bills or high long distance bills.. this is the solution..
