I looked at a number of unlimited calling options and decided to choose Vonage for two primary reasons. First, the web interface enables me to manage and access my account from anywhere. Second, I can take my Vonage phone adapter with me when I travel and use my "home" phone.

The order and install process was a breeze. I ended calling rather than ordering online, and the person I spoke with was very helpful, very efficient, and was able to combine a couple of incentives for me.

The install process was no problem at all. I received the phone adapter in two business days (I requested 2nd day delivery). I plugged the adapter into my DSL modem directly (just to try the out-of-box experience) and immediately got a dial-tone.

For my endstate configuration, I plugged my wireless router back in, plugged the phone device into the router, defined a static IP for the phone device, defined a set of QoS rules giving the phone adapter priority on my network. It's been working fine, even when streaming video or audio from the internet to one of the four computers on my extended home network. Also, I have my DSL modem, wireless router, Vonage phone adapter, and cordless phone base all plugged into a UPS. (I actually got a chance to test it the other night when power went out for a couple of hours. I could continue making calls with no problem.)

The equipment I choose was the Motorola VT2142, one port router. Obviously I'm not using the router on the phone adapter. I have disabled all router functions and use it simply as the voice node on my primary network.

The only thing that reminds me I'm not on the PSTN is that occasionally, right when I pick up the phone, I get some static and noise for one or two seconds until a strong dial-tone comes through.

Frankly, my experience with Vonage thus far (one month) has been stellar. The service itself is fine. The sales process was great. I have not had an "opportunity" to need customer service or technical support, so I cannot comment on that at this time.
