    Update 04-27-2007

Well, I'm past the one year mark, and my DTA-310 is in a box on the floor.

Between the mid-line pricing, and less than stellar sound quality, I've cancelled my Packet8 service, and moved to a competitor. The lower cost per month, combined with a much improved sound quality, made ditching Packet8 a no brainer.

I never realized how much better my calls could sound until I made the switch. I've already have had several unsolicited remarks on the improvement from people I've spoken to.

    Update 04-19-2006:

As I said before: "So far, so good."

After all of the recent updates, everything is still working as expected, with minimal down time. The updates went fairly problem free, as it was a major firmware update. The problem I noticed (echo) after the initial firmware was updated now seems to be resolved with this latest version (14.17).

So the good news is, it's a telephone, and it works.

For the bad news, the price went up another $1.99 (E911 Service Fee). The website still is lacking for a communications company this size. They did add a users forum website, but the website design there is worse than the code they use on their business site.

I originally purchased service from Packet8 for the large number of international calls we make. I've since moved those calls to another service. As we use local service sparingly, I can see a provider change in my future unless Packet8 gets on the ball, and brings the services they offer (like CID w/name) up to the level of the other providers out there.

From all I've read, so far, so good.

I was locking to cut my POTS/LD cost, as well as find a better quality and lower cost solution for my LD calling to Eastern Europe. The cost is much lower, and with a bit of "adjusting", the voice quality is as good or better than any of the LD calling card services I've used to telephone out of the country. My only complaint about the sound quality is it seems to take a few seconds for the voice signal to stabilize once connected.

The 11-digit dialing is APITA, and I do miss the Caller-ID with Name, but someday (which may or may not come, I know) these features may be resolved.

The website looks like it was built by a community college Frontpage 101 class.

But Packet8 does what I ask of it. After all, it is just a telephone service... ;-p

Upgrade firmware - better codec? How?

I have been with Packet8 for a couple of weeks now, and love it. Did my research before taking the plunge into VoIP, and decided on Packet8 for value, features, and the company in general. I had SBC/AT&T before (foreever) and just got used to crappy service, line noise, unstable DSL, etc. (to disconnect my old landline from SBC after getting Packet8 took over 50 minutes and four transfers!). I even get a name with CID sometimes, maybe that's just a test phase for now. Almost all calls have been of better quality than I had with a landline. The only two that were about like an average cell call were due to my cable ISP, I am sure. I have read a couple of posts about a firmware upgrade to the G.711 codec from the default for better sound quality (even though it seems fine now - why not ensure I have the best codec?). Right after I got my BPG-510 adapter and hooked up service, my adapter got the "Big Upgrade" so I have 7-digit dialing, Find Me-Folow-Me (a great little feature), etc., right from the start. Question is, how do I upgrade the codec? Is there a file I can download? Should I call Packet8 Tech. Supp. (I had some questions initially and got polite, to-the-point service - a REAL plus in my book!) and ask them to upgrade my codec? You are all much more experienced with VoIP than I am, and I learned a long time ago, ask the experts instead of breaking it myself! I would not want to upgrade my codec and end up losing the feature upgrades in the "Big Upgrade" Packet8 just had. If someone could lead me in the right direction (or just come straight out and tell me how to do this "codec thing") I'll put in a good word for you with the Great Pumpkin. BTW - with my unlimited residential plan (doesn't make as much sense with my daughter gone to college now! - but 500 minutes just is not enough) the E911 service fee (which I am happy to pay for...had to pay for 911 with SBC too), the recovery fee and excise tax, I'll be spending about $24 a month. Quite a savings from SBC - closer to $45 per month because you have to buy "Feature packages" to get things like CID, voicemail, and then my LD carrier charges on top of that, plus more fees...I am fat 'n happy with Packet8. I don't work for them, so I have no reason to blow smoke. After all, this is just my experience, albeit a very good one. Joe Blow in BFE may get crappy service from everybody except the newest company to come along.
