9/12/2009 - Rock solid service so far.
8/13/2009 - About to be dumped by AT&T so I am giving VP another try. If everything goes well, I'll port my number over to them. So far so good. Call quality is as good as AT&T CallVantage which was excellent for 5 years.
All reviews below are from before 2005
Decided to try VoicePulse due to cheaper rates than Vonage and their offer of virtual number for Knoxville, TN. My current VOIP Vonage rates are higher and do not offer the Knoxville number.
Received it July 15th after ordering on Saturday July 10th. I plugged it into my LinkSys EW5Hub router at noon. It is working within seconds. I soon notice that some incoming calls are being forwarded straight to voicemail. I contact VP support via email and answer all their questions. I stopped working at 5pm and returned to my office at 10pm to find my Internet connections on both laptops stopped working and no dialtone on the VoicePulse phone. However my Vonage phone is working. After rebooting everything, still no Internet connections. I then go get my Linksys WRT54GS from downstairs and switch it out with the LinkSys EW5Hub. Now I get Internet connections on both laptops and the Vonage phone is still working. I reswitch the routers and still nothing works with the LinkSys EW5Hub but my Vonage phone (Cisco ATA 186). I reswitch again and now all work with the Linksys WRT54GS except the VP SPA 2000. I contact VP support to report the lack of dialtone.
Is it possible the SPA 2000 screwed up the LinkSys EW5Hub? It had worked perfectly for 2 years until today.
I've had Vonage for 11 months and found them very reliable. There were a few outages in the early months but have been flawless for the past 6 months. The Vonage call quality seemed better compared to the calls I made today with VP.
I plan to keep Vonage and VP for a month or two and terminate the worst of the two based on cost and quality. At this point Vonage is better by far. I'll keep everyone posted.
July 16th...8:44 PM - After corresponding with VP support about 6 times today, they decided to send me a new SPA 2000. I've got my VP number forwarded to my Vonage number which by the way has worked flawlessly. Vonage prices don't look so bad after 2 days with VoicePulse. If only Vonage would add coverage for Knoxville, then I'd stop looking around.
July 21st..10:15 AM - I received the replacement SPA 2000 and it is working. I made no changes to my router. I'm now waiting for VP to move my number from the old SPA to the new SPA 2000. The new SPA 2000 has a temporary NJ number. VP sent a prepaid UPS label so all I need to do is send the old SPA back in it's original box. I've made a few calls and the quality is good so far.
July 21st..3:30 PM - My number has been moved from my old SPA 2000 to the new one. Everything is working so far. The calls don't go straight to voicemail anymore.
July 25th 10:14 PM - I still have the problem every once in a while where the VP line won't take incoming calls and they get forwarded to the Line Unavailable number. I test this quite often with my POTS line. It's happened twice today where I call it mutiple times and the VP phone never rings....but I do receive emails from VP notifying me of the Line Unavailability. I was able to call out on the VP line so I know it is not dead. Also was able to receive calls on the Vonage line at the time VP wouldn't work. I sent an email to VP support but have not heard anything back. Once again, Vonage service is superior to VP service.
July 26th 11:03 AM - Received the following email from VP Tech Support and will test out their fix for the next 48 hours:
"We ran the trace all night and just finished taking a look at the data collected. There is something odd going on whenever your unit switches from one of our proxies to another (the switching itself is normal, and should be instantaneous). In this particular case, whenever your unit switches, there is a long period in between where it stops talking to one of our gateways, but doesn't begin talking to the new one -- and this is when your calls go to line unavailable forwarding.
We've made some changes to your unit's configuration to help us confirm our line of thinking. If we're on the right track, then you should not experience the problem at all over the next few days. We're going to leave your setup as it is for the next 48 hours, and would appreciate it if you could let us know if even a single call goes to line unavailable forwarding during that time."
July 30th - No problems since VP support changed the SPA configuration. The voice quality seems to be on par with Vonage or a POTs line. I am enjoying having the Knoxville virtual number. I've increased my ratings for VP based on the good tech support I received during my problem.
Oct 6th - I dropped Vonage and VoicePulse. Both were OK but I needed a very reliable service for my business line. I went with CallVantage and have not regretted it. The call quality is superior to Vonage and VoicePulse and the reliability has been 100% so far.
