I called Telocity before the end of January. They were running a deal at that time whereby installation was waved.
So I called to find out what speed I might get from them. I am about six blocks from the CO.
The woman who answered the phone (I have her name but will not post it here) told me that I would get 1.5Mbps. I was impressed and told her that their web site only states 512. She told me that the rate did not apply to Indianapolis.
So, with this information in hand, I ordered. She promised me 4-6 weeks. It tooks over 50 days for the service to be connected. This is over 7 weeks.
So, three parties had to assist in the DSL--Ameritech, Rhythms, and Telocity.
Access to my Network Interface is behind my garage and behind a locked fence in the backyard. I came home for lunch from work one random day and while I was there, Ameritech came and asked for access. Ameritech had informed me that they had been there once before and that they could not access the box and so had to come back. They contacted Telocity and Telocity informed them that someone would be home on this date. Never was I contacted about this visit by Telocity.
The Ameritech install went great. The first time that I ever received decent service from Ameritech.....
I once tried contacting Telocity for an order status via the e-mail instructions on their web site. I received a confirmation that the message was received by their system, but never received a response---to this day.
Next came Rhythms. Their part worked great. They called to schedule an appointment and made the appointment just fine. However, Telocity had not shipped me the modem before Rhythms arrived so Rhythms could not complete their tests. I tried calling Telocity days before Rhythms arrived but after waiting for more than 40 minutes I hung up. Same thing happened the next day. After Rhythms' visit I called Telocity to find out where it was, I was simply told "its not been shipped" and that it would be shipped right away.
When the modem arrived the NEXT day, I began the installation. My PC could find the modem fine and the modem connected to the DSL circuit fine, but it could not find the Telocity configuration server or so I was told. They would look into it.
Finally, it was all connected (3 days after the Rhythms visit), and the speed they set me for was 784. I called to find out why that it was so much slower than what I promised when ordering and I was told that I was lucky to get 784 because all they offer in Indianapolis is 512. I was also told not to hold my breath on the 784 because they would be reducing all connections to 512 over time. When I asked about why I would have been quoted 512, the guy told me to read my service contract and it would say 512 there--I never got a contract. He said that if I had been on their web-site I would have seen the limitation--well, I already explained that one--the agent told me that it did not apply to Indy (I should have gotten it in writing).
Now, I was prepared to receive somewhat less than 1.5 but half????? And they're going to reduce it further???? Give me a break. While I'll may wrong, my gut feeling tells me they have limitted my line. I know of others in Indy that have DSL and are much further from their CO and they are getting 1 Mbps.
The whole process is what I would call bait-and-switch. The BBB will be getting a report on this one. And Telocity will be out a bunch of money when I terminate my contract within the 30 days--I think I'll have to cancel on principal.
BTW, I called their order line just now to see what they were promising for a rate at my address and they told me to check the web site. But their order line answers within one ring. Try calling tech support (20-50 minutes of hold each time).
