I’m an Internet consultant, and part of my job is to be knowledgeable of Internet services so I can make prudent recommendations to my clients. I’ve also been considering VoIP phone services for myself. Some recent changes to my home phone system and Internet access forced the issue recently.

After substantial, research, I chose SunRocket VoIP service over other available services. Their highly rated customer support services decent rates convinced me to choose them. The switch had a few snags with Verizon causing delays with transferring my phone number. Other than that, I had absolutely no problems with installation and start-up.

Installation was very easy. I plugged their “gizmo” into my LAN network, plugged a phone into the gizmo and got a dial tone right away. Phone calls through SunRocket are extremely clear, which is unlike my Verizon phones. SunRocket charges $29.95/month for the phone service plus all the features I had with Verizon, who had charged me over $90/month.

SunRocket has a Web based control panel, which allows me to access my voice mails and change my features. A couple days ago, I forwarded my calls to my cell phone through their Web site and it took less than two minutes. I'm able to track ANY calls, including missed calls, on their call logging system. This feature had saved my bacon with a client who had tried to contact me while I was on the phone.

Technically, I can take my SunRocket phone system anywhere so long as I have high speed Internet service. I regularly visit Vietnam, and I plan to bring the gizmo with me next time so my phone will ring there and I will pay the same rates as if I was in the U.S.

One shortcoming is their message system is not as elaborate and the one I had with Verizon. I had provisions for six voice mailboxes with Verizon, while I have only one for each phone number with SunRocket. I did receive for free an additional phone number with it's own voice mailbox and special ring to my existing line. Also, they're working on better services for business customers. They don't have rotation services for multiple phone lines yet, but that is coming very soon.

Perhaps the best thing is SunRocket’s customer support. I’m talking to a live person within a couple minutes, where I could literally wait for hours with Verizon. I don’t get transferred from department to department, and the longest time I’ve been on hold was no longer than two minutes with SunRocket.

Long story short, I'm extremely happy with SunRocket and I highly recommend their service. In fact, I wonder why I hesitated for so long.

    Oh Boy... Was I Wrong...

SunRocket bit the dust, and I'm now scrambling to find a new service provider. So far, I have not realized any disconnection or lack of service other than my voice mail doesn't work anymore.

I find it unfortunate that SunRocket closed their doors. I was very satisfied with their service up till the end. Absolutely no complains except on how they closed their doors. Their management should have been more thoughtful concerning what would happen to their enormous customer base.

I'm certainly going to be more careful in choosing my new phone service provider, but I still believe VoIP is the way to go.
