Ordered service on Jan 8 and received equipment on the 13th. No local exchange but understandable since I live in a very rural town. I picked one that was local to family so they could call me without long distance charges. As this being my first VOIP expericence I decided to only go with month by month.
Installation was simple and straight forward.
Calls were just as clear as regular phone. However, on the 14th there was an outage and couldn't receive or make calls. Viatalk had everything back up in a few hours. Since I also have a cell phone the outage wasn't that big of a deal however, it made me wonder the reliability of Viatalk. Since then though, service has been flawless and Viatalk sends out emails when they plan to work on their system.
They have recently made good changes to their web interface which makes it easier to navigate. They have also added and are working on adding new features.
Support is quick to reply to tickets, even if it is just an idea for them to add another feature. There is also presence on DSLR forums.
Overall, this is a good company that knows how to listen to their customers. They are still fairly new and are still working out a few minor bugs and are working on adding features the customer wants. I plan to switch from montly billing maybe yearly soon.
Update 07/07/2006 I jumped on one of the $99 for a year specials. Still am happy with the service and have had very little outages. Usually an occasional reboot of the PAP2 and all is well. VT are still bringing new features to their service. I have heard about some people having to wait awhile for tech support. However, every time I have tried via a web ticket, I get a pretty quick response. Don't get me wrong, I have only used support once for a problem, which I had to gain admin to the PAP2 and redo a couple of settings. Everything else was for an idea, or to change payment plan. Many naysayers claim that once VT grows, their cusomter service will go down. While they did have a bad streak after one of their specials, they expanded and adapted to the higher demand. VT is getting a lot of customers and I still see a presence on the BBR forums. Overall I am still very happy with VT and plan to keep their service.
Update 1-14-08
Still decent service as I don't use the phone too much a recent outage went unnoticed. However, now like all the major phone companies they are slowly increasing their prices by adding certain "fees". It would be nice for once to for example, to pay for a service for a year and be done with it until it's time to renew. Currently you pay for a year service and then they charge you a measly $2.50 every month. Not sure if I will renew when my year is up since everybody is doing the same thing now.
