I have had VT for about 3 months now. It's been a bit up and down, but good for the most part. At first i was having issues with echo/static, but a few tickets into support, we got it fixed, and moved the PAP2T adapter into a DMZ on my router. Seems to be okay for now.
Sometimes calls dont go through, and this is a pretty wide-seen problem from what i've read on the VT forum. Supposedly it's ''fixed'' but within the last week i was having times when i was unable to dial out, so i know people wouldn't have been able to dial in. Sometimes i have to cycle modem, router, adapter, because of power outages, or sometimes i will get a slight static on the line.
I also posted on the VT forum that i would dial, and it would take around 30 seconds to start ringing, if it even rang at all. The kind folks over there told me it was doing that because i was not dialing 11 digits, so all i have to do now is push # when im finished dialing, and it goes through in about 2 seconds.
One of the things i was worried about before signing up, was if i would be able to still use the caller ID feature on my Direct tv receiver. The VT guys weren't sure, but when i got it i got a splitter, put it on the adapter, have a line going to the phone, and to the receiver, and it works great.
All in all, i am enjoying the via talk very much. People cant tell a difference then normal POTS, call quality is great, even better than my old POTS. Ah, my old POTS, i should say something about that. I had trouble with my POTS line for almost 2 years with constant humming/static on the line. I had at least a dozen techs out to look at it, they would say they found something, then they would close the ticket saying its fixed, and it never was. The hum was so annoying, but people i would call couldn't hear it, just me. So after about 2 years, naked DSL became available to me, so i signed up, It was the best thing i could have done. The one problem i did have with VT, was number porting. This was a big deal to me as i have had the same home number for over 20 years, and i wanted it to take it with me. So i did a pre-sales chat and the lady said wait a moment, ill run a check to see if your number is portable, she said yes, so thats when i signed up. But after about 3 weeks with my temp number, i was told the number can't port. This is a HUGE bummer to me, as i have had to re do all my providers, etc, with the new number ( my temp number became my permanent)
Overall, i would recommend this service, but only to people who have a decent knowledge of technology, as, at least for me, took a while to get working right because of things you had to "tweak". But i recommend everyone put the device in a DMZ, seemed to help me for the most part, and choose a server closest to you.
