"Didn't work most of the time"
"Viatalk is still in business because of their rock bottom prices and their long-term locked in contracts."

It was a lovey dovey relationship. Then a love-hate relationship. Finally it was a hate relationship.
I first signed up for Viatalk because of the glowing praise of reviews and forum posters here. It seemed like a can't lose proposition. I was looking to move away from Vonage after 4 years because their fees kept creeping up (even though Vonage provided me perfect service in those 4 years). Viatalk seemed like a great alternative because of their upfront pre-pay pricing.
I received my adapter several days after ordering and I was up and running with a temp number. My number took a couple weeks to port and all was well. Sure there were a few hiccups in the early days but overall the service was reliable.
Then something happened, my phone service became unreliable. Broken up audio, one-way audio, dead air after dialing, calls not going out, calls not coming in. At first I put up with these problems because of the low price (something Viatalk defenders always mention here....."what do you expect for the price you are paying").
I tried working with support but the hold times were unbearable (hours---followed by a disconnect). And if I was able to get through to someone they were often times rude or unknowledgeable. The ticket system was just as unreliable. Tickets sitting for weeks with no resolution. Finally I just finally gave up dealing with support. Regardless of their "fix" the service was still unreliable. Also, I didn't like how they always seemed to blame something on my end. If you read the forums here you will see that is quite common.
I finally came to a point where I decided that it would be better for me to give up a portion of my "free" year in order to get reliable phone service. I switched to another provider and my service has been rock-solid since day one with them.
The only good thing in the final days with Viatalk was the ease to cancel. It was handled very efficiently which leads me to believe they have had lots of experience with cancelling accounts as of late.
Viatalk works for some people but as has been documented here in the forums, once die-hard Viatalk fans and defenders have jumped ship because of unreliable service. Heck, I was once one of those fans and defenders. The only advice I can give is to do all the research you can. Read all the reviews and the forum before choosing Viatalk as your provider.
