Update (May 30th, 2008): Since the last update, I changed my connection from 5MBit DryDSL in Toronto to 5 MBit DryDSL in Hamilton - The move was very smooth! I missed the tech the first time around, but that's hardly TSI's problem. Since then, my connection has been rock-solid. If my server (in Hamilton) went offline, it wasn't long enough for me to notice, three towns over. Planning a move in August to a new house in Hamilton, and will most likely try setting up MLPPP to bypass Bell's throttling. I'm not anticipating any problems.
Update: TSI Upgraded my internet connection to 5 MBits. Very good!
Original review:
Note: The monthly price is higher than the regular DSL of $29.95/mo due to the fact that I ordered Dry DSL, which includes a $7.25/mo charge in order to rent the phone line from the TelCo.
Type of Account: Dry Copper Loop DSL (DDSL) 3 Megabit Account
On Monday August 14th, I put an order through their website at ~5:00 PM. By 9:47 PM, I had received a phone call and an introductory email. (Same day service, wow!) The quoted activation date was August 18th (Just 4 days!)
Introductory email and phone call were very thorough, and I enjoyed talking to the representative. He made sure all of my questions were answered, and gave me options to contact them in case I had any more. What's important is that he didn't sound like he was reading from a script, which was great!
I then received a package at 11:33 AM on Wednesday, August 16th, which contained the modem with a power adapter.
On August 18th, a Bell Technician came to the apartment and set the line up for the Dry Copper Loop. As I didn't move in until two days after, I can only assume that the internet was up on that day. True to their word, order to activation was only 4 days, which is quite good.
Old ISP: 3327 / 666 (4 Mbit Bell Sympatico, Mississauga, 500 meters from remote) TekSavvy: 2387 / 171 (3 Mbit TekSavvy, Toronto, 100 meters from CO/remote)
As the upload speed is a bit low, I called their toll free tech support line. The phone was picked up after 2 rings (!) and I was transferred to tech support after being on hold for half a minute. The representative was very helpful, and tried his very best to resolve my problem. He was determined to find out exactly what the problem was, and didn't immediately jump to the conclusion that I had to restart my modem. After guiding me through setting up the modem and internet again, the speed test results are as follows:
TekSavvy: 2437 / 641 (3 Mbit TekSavvy, Toronto, 100 meters from CO/remote) (Tested at »speedtest.cogeco.net/)
Which is just perfect! TekSavvy is amazing. Their no-strings-attached agreement is excellent, and is what every ISP should be like. There is no contract to agree to, and I can leave whenever I wish, which I highly doubt I'd be doing. Quick setup, and awesome tech support. Highly recommended!!
As wholesalers are now allowed to upgrade Residential accounts to 5Mbit profiles, I can't wait to see what my line can take! I feel confident in having TekSavvy handling my ISP, and would easily recommend it to friends/family.
