well, i am updating my review of verizon FIOS. i have been living in the same house now since 2004. i had FIOS turned on in august 2005. at that time, comcast was the only game in town, but verizon came, and i jumped at the chance as soon as i could. installation was a breeze. in the 3+ years that i have had fios, i can only remember 2 days of downtime, and the downtime was less than 8 hours. both times, verizon credited me for a day's worth of service without question.

in september 2007, i upgraded my line from 15/2 to 15/15. i consistently get 1.8+MB/s when there is a pipe big enough, which is usually either my paid usenet account, or BT. but i hit 1.8+ regularly both up and down. i am very pleased with my speeds, and happy to pay the extra money for 15/15 symetrical.

i don't remember what equipment was supplied when i first got FIOS. i do remember that it was a hardline router though, and not a wireless one like they offer today. i've since bought my own equipment. FIOS comes into a gig router, and then to a gig switch, and then goes out to 1 server, 3 clients.

i still haven't gotten triple play, because i still have tivo with direcTV. but those days are numbered unless direcTV ever issues a HD tivo unit (yea right). sooner or later, i assume i will get FIOS TV as well, but right now, it's just the hard phone line and internet. i pay about $100 a month for phone and 15/15 internet.

15/15 for $65 is a great deal if you want speed. if not, even the basic 5/2 package for $45 is great (and i have seen deals where it is as low as $39). the reliability, capacity, low occurrence of downtime make verizon FIOS an excellent product. if i ever move, honestly, one of the first questions i am going to ask is...is FIOS available in this neighborhood?

    two thumbs up for FIOS!

got the Verizon triple play and IMMEDIATE price increase

I just decided to say "what the Hell" and bought the Verizon triple play to save some money. Two weeks later they announced that they're jacking up my FIOS rates from $34 a month to $47 a month.

    What a freakin' con!
